Hoping somebody out there has experience of doing this. I've removed the rear dampers from my 1975 Triumph Toledo and springs to refurb, but (and I know I should have rolleyes), I failed to notice that the top spring cup isn't completely flat on stripping the dampers and springs. As shown the photo below, there is a slope on the mounting face ( the part circled in red is the lowest point). It is similarly sloping underneath too.

The Haynes manual uses the typical "refit in the reverse order" and even my 1973 BL parts catalogue shows the cup as being flat. frown

Toledo and Dolomite parts are mostly the same but I can't find any reference to it on a google search of both models.

Edited: I didn't ask a question, doh! Which way round does it fit? My instinct is to have the low end pointing forward end so that the rear dampers slope very slightly forwards and upwards, but perhaps not?

Are there no witness marks from where the ends of the springs sat inside the cups?

Google says there's an owner's club/forum. Worth a look/ask the question?

Perhaps the plate has distorted over time and should be replaced?

No, they're both the same. I eventually found a couple of threads on the Dolomite forum, but it took some time! Thankfully, many of the older forums aren't protected. smile

When I reassemble the spring and damper, as long as the lower end of the top plate is at 90 degrees to the damper eye-end, there's only 2 ways it can fit, and it should be obvious if it's wrong. Famous last words rolleyes
