Hi there, what is everyone going to do about ULEZ and their modern non-compliant classics?

Will prices fall come August?

Wrap them up until they are 40?

Quite fancied a Corrado, but not if I can't drive it.

There have been several demonstrations: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11976179/...

There was a thread recently from someone who purchased a modern classic because it was ULEZ compliant, so I guess it is a double edged sword.

Ultimately, it's £12.50 a day.

That's not preventing anyone from driving.

If you daily it, then it's £3.2k each weekday.

If you drive once a month, its £150 a year. I don't support tor ulez, but it needs putting into context.

Specialist vans or campers must feel it the worst, as the cost of replacement is so high.

You need to rethink your maths!:

"It's £12.50 a day........If you daily it, then it's £3.2K each weekday......."

Nope! - It's £12.50 each weekday wink

I have a Granada Scorpio and an mk3 Escort Cabriolet, both of which will incur the ULEZ fee. I will be prepared to pay the fee to use each of these once or twice a month for a decent drive out, but it would be a bit crazy to stump up £12.50 multiple times a week for a short trivial journey each day.
Actually I live 2 or 3 miles inside the boundary, so my longer drives tend to be mainly outside the zone, not that makes any difference to the cost.

It makes me miserable to think about it. My car has 8 years until it is 40, but the goalposts will have moved again by then. I won't sell it, but ultimately I think it will sit in the garage and never get driven. I just can't see myself voluntarily paying £12.50 - it will make me bitter and cross and I won't enjoy it, especially as it will just be a 5 mile trundle to the edge of the zone that is costing the money. I mean, even taking it for an MOT will cost. censored

its very sad to think about. there's a ton of 90s and early 00s cars that i would love to own (rover mini being one) that i just wont be able to now. and I don't like the look of most cars that have come out from 2010 onwards. then when i look at the price of some cars from 04-onwards i think 'but that' price is crazy for a 15-19 year old car'

My campervan (not really a classic, just a regular van) is £300 a day if I brush the London LEZ, so I stay well clear.

My 2007 5 litre V12 is exempt though smile

I'm fortunately no where near a ULEZ area but is i not time you all had a revolt/riot/demo like the French would?
I'd certainly not be paying £12.50/day to use any car I own, fuel/insurance/VED alone are bad enough. You either move outside the Zone or but something compliant or kick the bloke out that invented this.
Out of curiosity, does he have a Mayoral car that ferries him about? Does he take annual holidays abroad on polluting aeroplanes...?.

We'll get a whole list of cars that are compliant now, like my 2006 4.6 litre V8 (MG ZT 260)...

So ULEZ compliant modern classics are out there, it's finding them though - but no help at all if you're already attached to a particular car.

Likely keeping my Merc as it is used so rarely that I'll just pay the charge.

The new ULEZ camera's around my borough are being repeatedly vandalised (some less than 24 hours after they've been repaired) so there's definitely some grass roots action taking place.

Despite the demonization of anyone contesting the ULEZ as being 'far right' by the mayor and TFL it seems that most the victims are Labour supporters (have noticed non complaint runabout cars outside the houses with Labour signs).

An older neighbour scrapped a decent condition Ford Scorpio last week due to the ULEZ, it had done less than 6k miles frown

I think it boils down to how often you're really going to drive it. Once a week is probably a fair estimate, long term, assuming not used much at all in the winter and more so in the summer.

Add that up (£650 per annum) and it's not a great deal of money the ULEZ, principles aside as I don't agree with it for those that want to use their perfectly reliable cars as daily transport.

You could get an older corrado and only be 6 or so years away from exemption anyway.

The Corrado is a great choice however, be warned many specific parts are obsolete and some others too. Other parts shared with mk2 and mk3 golfs are easy to find, however I've just paid nigh on £200 for a PCV valve for the VR6 which is common to the mk3 however is obsolete. I'd be more mindful of parts prices on Corrados than the ULEZ charge.

The French have similar zones in several cities across the country. And they include outright bans on some older vehicles...

At the moment not a problem for my 1991 daily, I bought it in Ireland and it is still taxed and tested there so staying that way for now

I might even take it back when they run out in 2024. .
