1992 Golf GTi 16v - How rare and how much?!
Discussion
This must be a record price for a 1992 Golf GTi 16v with 53k miles......£71,000. It's a US spec car. A quick scan of the comments on the auction appear to reveal that the 16v was a rare US market variant. But jeez what a price, and similarly to the recent Cosworth RS500 sale, it shows the 1980's/90's market has well and truly taken off.
I'm 54 and have always been into the 60's70's classics. I was 23 back in 1992 and remember Golf GTi MK2s were pretty common, but held no appeal to me.
I've posted this in GG because I generally think the Classic cars sub group is for the older classics, it wouldn't get a more general view in the VW group and GG would get a broader spread of opinions.
It's certainly a lovely example, but the mileage isn't what I'd call 'special low', so I'm a little gob smacked at the price. Happy to be educated though!

I’ve never been into the Volkswagen thing. However the Mk2 16v Golf is an icon and a great car. It made the Golf a proper hot hatch and something to rival the Escort RS Turbo.
I particularly like the post 90 models with the larger bumpers and stripey seats. I did however hear that they are a little buzzy at motorway cruising speeds.

It does seem to be way, way more expensive than what a similar mileage car would be over here though. Imagine they are way more plentiful in LHD form too, surely.
That's what I was thinking re the UK market prices. I've lived in the US 19 years now and from what I can tell the US market, even though a LHD market, didn't get a lot of the hot hatch European stuff back then or what they got was diluted by emissions requirements and 'fugly' bumpers etc. No Integrales, R5 GT Turbos, 205 GTis etc. I don't think they even got a European built Golf GTi mk1, they got a US assembled Rabbit GTI version. It does seem to be way, way more expensive than what a similar mileage car would be over here though. I guess it's similar to the UK 'Fast Ford' scene in the UK at the moment with the Gen X'rs having the money to indulge in their late teen/twenties dream.
This seems like an awful lot of money. I never realised that the US got a 2.0 version of the mk2 GTi - however it was to compensate for the emissions strangulation as it produces the same figures as the Euro 1.8. It also transpires that SA got the 2.0 8v in the mk 2.
I had an 8v back in the day - fantastic car, loved it to death. My dream garage may have room for an oak green 16v 5 door (or better still a G60 Limited) but a US market 3 door for 80 grand? Er, no thanks....
