I'm looking for agreed value insurance on a 30 year old jap hot hatch with slight modifications. Do I go with whoever gives the cheapest quote, or is anything to be aware of? Any recommendations?

I've been with Footman James for years and have been happy. Had a write-off claim fifteen years ago which was dealt with quickly and easily, and they are fine with both an old classic and a 1993 modern classic being covered for unlimited mileage and business use.

I use https://www.rhspecialistinsurance.co.uk. Don't know if they are cheapest, but seem OK.

Honestly, unless the car is worth tens/hundreds of thousands, I would just go through the usual compare websites. First thing I then look for is how many stars the providers that come up have been given and the price. You can then go link onto providers website directly and fine tune you're requirements such as agreed value, whether the they'll accept your NCB from previous insurer etc, these 2 are a must for me. That and never tick the box for breakdown cover. I'd always go for one of the well known ones with their own fleet . There's always deals to be had there also.

I had a 1997 Honda Prelude 2.2i last year and it was way cheaper to insure it as a classic. £80 for 2000 miles. Comparison websites like meerkat often put classic insurers up now. smile I only had market value though since it was only a £2k car.

I used Lancaster for three years on my TR6 but come renewal in October last year I shopped around and went with Adrian Flux £65 cheaper for exactly the same cover

I'm waiting on delivery of my TR6 next week and I've had an insurance quote for £92 which seems astonishingly cheap. It'll be my first classic car and I was expecting to pay a lot more than that. I'm 41 years old and not using any NCB with one non-fault claim. Fully comp and stored in a a garage away from home. Hardly seems worth shopping around too much to be honest unless I'm missing something.

Do you have guaranteed value if it’s a total loss or stolen. My car is guaranteed £28000 for which I have to supply photos of the car. My cat is a couple of steps down from concourse. I paid £162 from memory which includes roadside assistance.

No, Ive not got a quote for a guaranteed value. I've never done that with any car to be honest

That does seem too cheap. My Mini (agreed value of £4k as it needs renovation soon) is stored at my parent's house in a 0 crime are known for ridiculously cheap car insurance and I couldn't get much cheaper than £260 with breakdown cover for 2k mileage. Happy at £20 a month but hearing of people with much more expensive and desirable cars paying sub-£100 is a bit of an eye-opener.

I've never used them but I have read positive feedback about Classicline, who will apparently also cover "future classics" that aren't 20 years old yet.

I've used Lancaster for a number of classics - It used to be possible to get a deal through TopCashback too, though many of the insurance companies seem to have dropped off there now?

Best last year was £76 for 3k miles, £11k agreed value on a 1969 Land Rover with £46 through TopCashback, making it £30 for the year

Beware of using the suspiciously cheap classic insurers that show up on comparison sites.

FJ seem to have a reasonable reputation but for the cheaper ones definitely google and read some reviews before you buy.

I've been with Lancaster for 5 years.

Had an accident 4 years ago, hit from rear and although I couldn't see any damage the final bill was £3.5 K as it was all hidden behind the plastic bumper.
3rd parties insurance company did it all, sent an engineer to my house and he arranged for MB main dealer to do the repair.

Just had another minor accident (hit from behind again !) and yet again I cant see any damage. Still I want the car checked, but I've found Lancaster to be pretty useless so far.
The passed me over to their repair company, but because I cant "see" any damage they don't want to know and told me to go back to Lancaster, who say they don't send engineers out, so its up to me to go and get it looked at.
All Lancaster were interested in was I or any passenger of mine hurt.

So I will take the car back to MB tomorrow as they have offered to check it over.

If you're a member of the TR register you can get insurance with A-plan. I'm paying about £98 for a guaranteed value of £30K.

I’ve been with Classicline for years on various classics and their premiums have always been very competitive, including an agreed value which some other classic ‘specialists’ don’t offer.

Fortunately I've never had to make a claim to test how good they really are
