One of the true great works cars driven by Pat Moss, sister to the legendry Stirling Moss.

Pat Moss did very well with the mighty Austin Healey 77ARX. This image of the Healey at a control on the 1962 RAC Rally was navigated by Pauline Mayman.

They went on to finish 3rd overall and winning the Ladies Cup.

Winning the RAC Rally was Eric Carlson / David Stone in a Saab 96, second place was Paddy Hopkirk / W.S.Scott in another works Austin Healey 57 ARX.

This image was taken from the HMA Historic Motorsports Archive site, www.historicmotorsportsarchive.com

There are some great classic Rally Cars out there, many still being used around europe. I can remember these rally cars charging through the forests, when the foresty commission alowed them to.

How many are left of the works Healey's.

Nice old pic, I wonder what these lovely old Healeys are worth now.

Last ex-works Healey 3000 rally car that sold that I can find details for was BMO 93B, one of the four cars built for the '64 season, and which sold at Bonhams at Goodwood FOS in 2019 for £230k.

My personal favourite is SMO 746.

As a kid I watched it race in Modsports in the very capable hands of (Chief Constable) John Gott. Sadly Gott suffered a fatal accident at Lydden Hill in SMO and the car was wrecked.

SMO in Modsports spec :

…what I didn’t realise in those days was that SMO 746 had started life in 1959 as a Works rally car. It had a successful career on the rough stuff driven by Jack Sears, Pat Moss and Gott himself.

Stirling’s sister herself had a go at modifying the Big Healey during 1960 :

In 2017 - courtesy of Denis Welch Motorsport - SMO reappeared in original spec and has been raced in Historics since.

I was reacquainted with SMO at my local circuit (Portimao) last October. Suddenly the realisation that I had last seen it race over half a century earlier…

This is the photo I have of my Dad’s first Healey.

He was a rally driver, but occasionally raced. I certainly remember him racing at Silverstone.

The name John Gott was mentioned several times in our household.

Thanks for posting your photo and bring back my childhood memories.

One of Mike Hawthorns old Austin Healeys being driven by one of the directors of the BARC in the 1960's, Peter Fulke Greville. I think this was at Aintree and the class was a mixture of Jaguars, TR's and a Daimler SP250.

This has provoked several memories.
I saw and met John Gott several times when he raced at Silverstone in the 70s , I understand that he died from a heart attack while racing at Lydden.
I also met Pat Moss-Carlsson several times as the company I worked for did work for both her and her brother Stirling at their homes .

Indeed SMO746 still resides at Denis Welch Motorsport. From memory if you just turn up and ask to see it they will happily show it to you..

JME had or maybe have what many would consider the coolest of the works Healeys, the Moss/Wisdom 1960 Liege Rome Liege winning 3000 Mk1for sale at £550,000. URX 727 is fully restored back to 1960 specification and comes complete with lots of memorabilia. I'm not sure how much beyond the chassis plate has come from the original car, as is often the way with works rally cars.

However iconic the car, the price is a huge premium over what the other works cars have been selling for when they occasionally become available.

Given the price tag, I really appreciated the opportunity to sit in the car on the JME stand at the NEC Classic Show a couple of years ago. It made my day to sit there for a couple of minutes and feel the history oozing out of the car.

John Gott was the Chief Constable of Northampton, a large stout man that liked to have a good malt in the clubhouse at Mallory Park after the event, and sometimes during the events, as did many in those days, Gerry Marshal comes to mind.

Stirling Moss was quite a wild card in his younger days, with him and his first wife often seen lounging round the pool during the French GP week. On one occasion he sported a pony tail wig and had an apple throwing contest with a pal of his.
