Car ownership: yours / family... now fetching good money

I like seeing all the old cars that keep popping up on Auction sites or Barn find type pages, & then reminiscing of days gone by.
It’s seems that even the humdrum cars of the past can / try to fetch decent money these days.
We were a Ford family for many years... then Vauxhall’s started to creep in.
Moi: ‘78 Escort MKll (1300L, 2door)... is about the closest that I can get.
Dad: Ford ‘Pop’, ‘59 Consul & ‘63 Cortina Mk1 GT.
( I can just remember the ‘Pop’).
Brothers: Cortinas Mk2 1600E & GT.... Escort ll, 1600 Sport.
A few real oldies popped up recently & Milkyway Sr (94) remarking that he nearly bought one of those.
Always raises a smile & some memories...a mixture of good & bad.

Retrospectively I was an idiot to sell my first car, a 2 door Mk1 Escort which had a solid shell.
Or the 5 door Range Rover I took in lieu of a £600 payment and ran for a year until the clutch went.
Or the 3 door, black Saab 900 turbo I parked on my in-laws' drive for a year because I ran out of space, and had to sell for £200 because the slave cylinder had failed.
Or th.... No, stop, I can't do this anymore!

Not many of them about those days... always fancied a Avon Turbo Acclaim.

"Taking in lieu of a debt" reminds me of the Hudson Hornet my Dad accepted for a £25 debt. It drank petrol of course but it was one hell of a car back then. Cars I owned? Perhaps an M1 I bought for £25,000, and there are many others, including the E-type I've had forty years and the Lynx 22 years. What would this one be worth now? I paid £16,000 for it new in 1985
I won't think too much about the M6 that followed that one, or the E30 323 and E36 325i either. So many cars and so much money spent!

He bought and sold old race cars and exotics in the 60 and 70s to trundle around in.
Id hate to tot up their values today. Cars included GT40, 275GTB, Muira, Daytona, rally cars, detomaso pantera, iso, McLaren's, amongst many many others.

That's a depressing recollection for a Monday morning. I had mostly boring cars when young, but a mini, citroen Dyane, singer gazelle, fiat 127, even the allegro and lada estate would make money now. Then moved on to xr2 followed by a scirroco, and more painfully a selection of series land rovers, and one that really hurts, a very early landrover 90 genuine CSW. Hate to think what they go for now.
My dad, who wasn't into cars, had a Volvo Amazon followed by a 144, then a Saab 96 then a 99, all while I was old enough to drive them - any of those would be lovely in my garage.

My father bought a Riley Gamecock special from David Jones, (later called himself David Bowie) in about 1965.
Apparently it had put him in hospital while trying to start it as the starting handle went through his leg as he had left it in gear.
This was casually mentioned a year or so ago when I was helping him clear some boxes of stuff and picked a starting handle up. It's the only bit he still has left of it. Now in a box of stuff in my garage.
Not sure the current owner is even aware of the history.

AS I always sold a car to pay for another back in the day, still do to a degree, I’ll try not to reminisce too sadly, instead think how lucky I was and what good taste I had/have

Winner has to be Anthony bamford though.

Then BOTH DB5 arrived. So he pays half of a Mini each, for the most famous car in the world. But this isnt the end of the story.
He didnt need both of them so he swapped one..

I once met a guy who I guess by now would be 100 if he's still alive, who with 3 mates bought a Bugatti. I guess this was 40s? 50s? They paid something like £20 for it, £5 each, but couldn't afford to run it so after a while sold or scrapped it!

Saw a mint Cav SRI go for over £10k just this week.
I used to by junkers in the 90s. Would never pay more than £30, most have one or two weeks MOT, and probably would not pass either. I was spoilt for choice when the scrap value dropped and you have to pay the scrappy to take them away!
