Hello, I am planning a trip to Retromobile in Paris at the beginning of February and hope there are people on Piston Heads who have been before. I am travelling independently doing a couple of days at the show before my daughter flies out to join me for some sightseeing. Got a couple of questions for seasoned users of public transport in Paris.

I know you can buy a pack of 10 metro tickets, I think they call it a carnet. Am I correct in thinking they can be used on Metro, bus and the RER?
If they can be used on the RER can they be bought at the airport for the initial journey into Paris?

I am also interested in Le Paris Visite Passe. Can these be bought at CDG airport? Do they cover out as far as the airport? What sort of price are they?

Your train journey into Paris from the airport isn't covered by those tickets. You can buy a single or return at the airport and then just pick up your metro tickets from a separate machine when you get into the city.

It's technically possible to get around a few stations without tickets at all, but they're so cheap it's almost not worth doing that.

I would take your own lunch with you, the food inside the venue is very expensive!

Enjoy!

Went in 2020 before the world went mad and it was a brilliant show with so much to see. smile

Thanks for the replies. I will try and buy some sandwiches near by. If I take them from home i will need a certificate from a vet!

We went in 2015, we rented an apartment next to the exhibition hall.
I really enjoyed it.
Lots of cars that one would be unlikely to see in UK.

Will be there on the Thursday. Looking forward to it as always. As threespires says, its interesting to see things you would not normally see in the UK. Usually some oddness from the French manufacturers. Should be a good display to celebrate 100 years of Le Mans too

The RER linking the centre to the airport has a reputation for criminality. Don't display too many outward signs of wealth.

We were in Paris in Nov - we bought a travel pass ( Navigo Decouverte ) at CDG which lasted 7 days - cost was around 20 euros . It runs from Monday to Sunday which was a pain as we arrived on Sunday ...
You can use it for all metro and buses inc. to CDG on an unlimited basis and get a discount on the bateaux buses too

Think you need a picture for these - best to check

Fortunately I don't have many outward signs of wealth as I am leaving my classic car at home. But thanks for the warning. I will wear my Argos watch rather than my 60th birthday watch!

Some brilliant pics, chriswhitlock, but this one gets my attention.

It's the unique Kremer Porsche 917K/81, built and entered by the Kremer Brothers about a decade after the 917's heyday at Le Mans.

In essence, rule changes meant that most manufacturers' development efforts were directed towards the upcoming Group C rules so the Kremers saw an opportunity and decided to build an updated 917K with improved aerodynamics and uprated chassis to take advantage of improvements in tyre technology. Jean Rondeau's victory a year earlier, in his own car, must have played a part in their plan. You can see the deeper front end, side sills, the rear spoiler filling in the gap between the original fins and the 917's iconic open rear bodywork partly filled in. Porsche left a couple of flat-12 engines round the back of the factory for them to use and they recruited local hotshoes Bob Wollek, Guy Chasseuil and Xavier Lapeyre to do the driving.

With the altered aero, the car proved some 40kph slower down the Mulsanne than the '70s cars but Wollek put it on the grid in 18th and it was running in the top 10 before a fuel miscalculation saw it return to the pits pushed by an exhausted Chasseuil. Lapeyre had an altercation which caused an oil leak and damaged the engine in the eighth hour which saw them bring down the garage door.

Its only other race was the Brands Hatch 1000km where it retired with suspension problems.

It remains a fascinating footnote to the 917 legend, however. I've seen many 917s in the flesh, but never this one. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for the info Turbobanana. I did not know the history of it, I knew it was a Kremer car, but nothing more.

Looking again, you can see the differences between that and the Gulf 917
