Alarm Immobiliser Cat1 Thatcham options for 80s and 90s cars
Discussion
As was mentioned on the original thread, battery drain may be an issue for something used infrequently.
My old Saab had a Clifford alarm and immobiliser fitted (by the previous owner): properly done, with certificate of installation and quite a high spec.
It was a complete pain in the buttocks - always draining the battery, re-locking itself if you became distracted after you unlocked it, the siren melted (it was sited next to the downpipe, on a turbocharged car) and throwing a tantrum every time I put the battery on charge.
In the end I ripped the siren out, leaving the rest of the wiring intact because I didn't fancy messing with it. I fitted a motorsport kill switch under the dash, which was the finest immobiliser ever, although your clock will always be wrong

I've had a few cars that have previously been fitted with Clifford alarm/immobalisers and to be honest, they were often a bit rubbish. A pain in the ass to program/fault find on, sensitivity ranged from being able to walk up and rock the car side to side one day to it being triggered by a bird st hitting the ground in the next town. That said some of the options for example remote start, remote boot release, raise/lower electric windows, fold wing mirrors, turn headlights on were really handy to be able to add to 80s/90s cars. This does however come at a cost, i think my last Clifford 600 series was around £700.
Of the alarms that I have fitted to cars which just needed a Cat 1 alarm immobiliser for insurance purposes the Toad Ai606 ( around £300) is by far the simplest in terms of it's either on, off or on with the interior sensors turned off if you'd like to park up with the windows down a little.

Often the reason for poor alarm system performance is quality of installation/installer throwing in. I've had 3x Clifford Alarms, none have failed/work every time. The current Clifford system replacing the factory Sigma/BMW system in the Subaru Forester.
OP, can recommend the 650 series unit http://www.clifford.co.uk/ProductPages/Security_65... . Importantly, make sure the installers are an approved install Co' who do a proper job.

The top version of the 123 distributor has a link to your phone which requires a PIN to start the car.
Sod that - I lost my phone this morning, and learned exactly how screwed you are if/when you lose your phone nowadays. No way am I hooking up the car to the wretched thing.Never put your phone on the roof of the car while you take off your jacket
