No, not Prince - I think that was "sign o ' the times " - but this splendid road sign on an unclassified road near Ripon. I'd love to say the picture was taken through the Triplex screen of my Gordon Keeble but sadly it was taken from my Hyundai Kona (the only interesting thing about which is that its name means something terribly rude in Portugese. Apparently ).

The areas around Ripon (I live 4/5 miles to the east) are occasionally delightfully unspoiled, especially around Fountains and north westward towards Masham.

Pity it’s not your Gordon Keeble indeed!

I'm a few miles east of you. in Thirsk. The sign is on the back entrance to Newby Hall (misleadingly posted with no entry signs ) which goes past Givendale.

We’ve got quite a lot of the lovely old cast-iron black-and-white highway directional signs in our part of N Yorks, with the round NYCC lettered ‘cap’ on them.

About 25 years ago I visited one of their highway depots (at Kirkbymoorside), and there was a pile of old cast-iron signs in a corner, presumably waiting to be weighed in frown

Those old cast iron signs also often have the OS map reference cast in to them, which as a rally navigator I find fascinating!

And yes I agree about the roads around Masham, will have been along practically every single one at some point.

I snapped this one back in 1998 when I went to pick up a Mk1 Mini from a dealer in Sonning Common, as far as I know it's still there...

As a kid I used to love the road signs with built-in glass reflectors.

Not my photo but this is a current town sign near me -

You might notice it's twinned town is in West Germany, which hasn't existed since 1989.
You probably won't know that East Dereham is known as Dereham since the 90s.
You definitely won't know it's also twinned with a town in France because that hasn't made it onto the sign...

yes A nice way to get in to the Dales via Pateley Bridge/Hawes etc. or the Moors via Sutton Bank, Helmsley etc.

Love living around here, spoilt for choice compared to when I lived in Oxford which was st.

It’s perfect. I can see the White Horse at Kilburn from the back of my house, and my in-laws live on t’moors at Castleton, so it’s an area I’ll never tire of driving around.

Nor me, fabulous roads. Though the little men in ‘safety’ vans are increasingly common frown

Hardknott pass used to have signs saying

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

Sadly I can't find a picture but they really should put them back. One of the SatNav systems directs poor unsuspecting visitors over Wrynose and Hardknott as the main route to the western lakes.

Dunno if it's still there but this one in Herts was amusing. Perhaps we'll get one this year, well overdue for a real cold snap and snow.

And yes, if you didn't realise, they are actual places.

As in the legendary Mavis Enderby and Old Bolingbroke sign in Lincolnshire . A possibly mythical amendment (I've heard it from several people) was the insertion of 'To ' before the names and 'a son' after them . Some lovely signs - keep 'em coming.

BTW does Ireland still have the imperiously worded 'YIELD ' on give way signs? I remember them on childhood trips to Donegal in the Sixties .

I live in an old village and we have plenty of those signs around. They look really good. Sometimes the council take them down for cleaning then a load of posts go on Facebook saying they've been stolen until the council representative tells them to calm down. laugh
