Taking race photos
Discussion
I've been a photographer for many moons and have nearly 50,000 on my computer now, but recently I bought a new pocket camera, a Canon G5X. It's more sophisticated than your average in the class, permitting full manual control, and for the Le Mans Classic I decided to use it and try and take some racing shots. These photos were taken from indoors through the window of the club house at Mulsanne at a distance of over 100 yds, and I was amazed at just how good a quality one can get without the SLR and telephoto lenses.
These are but a few, and the rest were just as good. Quite amazing really.

Great little cameras! I played around with speed and aperture, shooting at 1000th and also panning at 250th, some of which were OK and some poor, but then you expect that with such a slow speed. I wouldn't be without it now. However, In a months time I am shooting a national golf competition, and that will require the Nikon (for the fps) and the 70/200 and the 200/400 unfortunately Am in muscle training for the event!
Impressive. At the opposite end of the photographic spectrum I went to Le Mans circa 1982 armed with my new Olympus OM10. I had never had a decent camera before but had spent about a month’s worth of my salary on the camera, various long lenses and fancy filters. I had no idea how to use it but it was stuffed in the boot of the Elan along with the tent and the BBQ.
My 4th Le Mans and obviously enjoyed it thoroughly. On return home 4x36 rolls were sealed into an envelope and sent off for development. That might need explaining to younger members but that’s how it worked in those days.
A week later - total devastation, my cherished photos returned. Fortunately I’m over in Portimao at the moment so cant post any images. However if you are ever in need of an historic photo of Le Mans ‘82 I’m your man. Choose from a menu which includes a blurred Rondeau, half a 956, catch fencing with a dash of white colour in the background (possibly an LC1 Lancia), truly evocative dark night-time shots ( very black) and a few of my feet.
