Hi all I’m a bit confused regarding the Ulez thing

A 1980 Trans Am I’m going to look at at the weekend is tax exempt and says historic vehicle on the log book etc , but when I check the TFL website it says it needs to pay the Ulez charge ??

I live just outside the zone currently but I know they’re thinking of expanding it next year to where I live so this kind of puts me off buying the car

I thought all historic vehicles should be Ulez exempt ? But then why does it say it needs to pay the charge ?

As a test I typed in reg numbers of 60’s and 70’s and early 80’s cars currently on eBay and on the TFL site some it says have to pay the charge and others it says they don’t ?

Anyone on here in London have this problem before or know what’s going on ?

Thanks

Classics / historic's over 40 years old are not automatically exempt, you have to apply to tfl to have the exemption recognised on the system .as they use APNR
TFL seem to make it difficult purposefully.
My scimitar is now recognised as an exempt car after applying.

If it's registered as Historic on the V5 then you shouldn't have to do anything to drive in the ULEZ area. The reason below is why there is the confusion and people are having to contact TFL.

When you are checking the ULEZ compliant/exempt websites to see if your car shows as 'Exempt', it will show as there IS a charge to pay (non exempt). Actually it will tell you 2 charges, the CC and the ULEZ even when it IS ULEZ exempt.
If you click 'Pay Charges' , it's only then it will show as exempt from the ULEZ payment.
This is because the checker sites are using its emissions data and not its registered status on the V5C.
