New to me is this September 1971 Ford Escort Mexico in Le Mans Green.

1 previous owner from new.

Car has been fastidiously maintained in it's 51 years, originally purchased from Roger Clark cars of Narborough, Leicestershire.

Roger ran the business with his brother Stan.

Before the car was handed over to its owner, Roger drove to the petrol pump and put £2 of fuel in (approx. 5 gallons).

Car is on it's original engine, runs like a sewing machine and still returns 37mpg.

Very nice, i like the wheels and its "stance" looks just right.

If Roger drove it, i bet the handbrake cables are stretched wink

Must have broke Phil's heart having to sell her after all this time, but he must be close to 80 odd now at a guess from memories of him.

When I first joined AVO OC in 1982, there were 3 committee members of the club that bought their cars new, and still owned them, Phil Wyllie with this one, Pete Williams with his Mex, and Roger Bailey with his RS2000 (which was the very last RS2000 sold new by a dealer)

It was an absolute pleasure meeting Phil. The car has such a rich history being with the previous owner for 50 years, a true survivor car.

Great to see an unmolested Mex and such a great colour.
Good luck getting 37mpg without the aide of a downhill road though laugh

Yup; I’m envious.

When I did stand-in work for my job, years back, used to keep a careful note of mileage ( also used to record cost to brim ) for mileage expenses in my first RS2000. Did a few max economy runs from Welsh coast to home and often saw low/mid 30s

The sub 20mpg runs late at night on a Thursday were a load more fun though cool

I think it was mostly mid 20s with general driving.

Mk1 1300GT was even better on a tickled throttle ……but as I recall, worse when you caned it hehe

Has something reversed into it? The driver's side bumper looksvery slightly tilted up in that pic but not in the handover pic
Probably just the light though.

I particularly appreciate the period details such as the the Lombard RAC windscreen strip and Ford Sport grill badge, I think Dad had one of those. Surely amongst everything lurking in the garage it can't have been thrown away.

Thank you guys. Some very observant people out there. The drivers qtr bumper has taken a knock, will be addressed later.

It has many battle scars within its 50 year single ownership.

Thank you for appreciating the car, the history and provenance is what makes it unusual.

Cibie Biodes smile

Shame they are not still on the car.

Oh, and Phil looked much like that when I first met him back in 1982 wink
