So a shout out for one of the new classic car magazines on the market, Issue 3 is out now. Anyone who used to be a fan of "Modern Classics" needs to take a look at this. Its different in style to the much missed MC, as there is less in the way of road testing and driving impressions, but the mix of cars is equally eclectic. The current issue mixes the Rover P6, Renault 4, Datsun 240Z and Alfa 916 GTV/Spyder, with a great feature on "forgotten hot hatches", including a special review of the Renault 19 16 Valve, one of my favourites from the early 90s. Its a really great magazine to be honest for anyone who loves everyday classics from the 70s, 80s and 90s and the less popular stuff that tends to get ignored in other classic car mags. I am certainly a fan and its filled the void for me left by Modern Classics, which was the perfect magazine for my particular tastes.

I’ve been in since issue 1 and am enjoying it

Magneto was a bit ‘Octaney’ for me

I mentioned this mag a couple of times on the Modern Classics mag thread but presumed no one else was getting it

I bought issues 1 and 2 but didn't think much of it and won't be buying it again.

I’ll give it ago, I’m going to have a look at the classic mag market. I’ve subscribed to Autocar for many years but the EV content is getting too much for me so I’m going to cancel it. (Yes I am a dinosaur)

Might give this a try now that my Classic and Sportscar subscription has expired.

I found Modern Classics a bit too Readers Wives, hopefully this might be better.

A problem with some mags is that editorial staff consider themselves lifestyle gurus or even philosophers. They are often inveterate name-droppers too,and even set themselves up to award prizes. I just want to know what they think of a Kia Picanto, Lotus7 , or a third hand Mondeo.

I've only found it in WH Smith,

There's also a mag called "Go Classics" that has started which covers similar ground to MC but I haven't found it anywhere for sale yet.

Its a bit of a slow burner Classics, Retro Modern. The first issue didn't hold my attention for too long and I wonder if the editors have realised it was covering too much of the 1970s stuff which the likes of Classic and Sportscar already have cornered. The last two issues have featured stuff from the 1990s and in the case of the Ford Racing Puma, the early 00s. This is the sort of stuff Modern Classics excelled in. I am liking the period advertising too which gives it a really nostalgic feel and the photography and general production quality is very good. It is very much like Octane in feel and flavour which is not a bad thing in my book.

I got in as a sub when I found out Strada was switching to Magneto which I wasn’t so keen on

Like you, I found the first one a bit ‘meh’ …..but issue 2 and 3 were right up my street

I never got into Strada, I assume it was a subscription only mag?

Yes the current issue of CRM felt like it was written just for me! So many of my particular favourites in one issue, unbelievable really. The Rover P6, Renault 4, Alfa Romeo GTV and Renault 19 16 valve- and the readers ride feature on the 5 door AX GT, again one of my favourite all time mini hot hatches. Also any magazine that features the Toyota Corolla GTI 16 valve, Nissan Almera GTI and Suzuki Swift GTI will get my support. I always did love the unsung hot hatches.......

I just hope enough people buy it to make it viable. It hasn't featured any BMWs, Ferraris or Porsches yet, which is a brave move for a Classic Car Magazine.

I’m surprised you missed the long-running thread on Strada

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=19...

It lasted only for one issue sadly

I hope this new mag manages to survive

I've not been on Pistonheads that much since March, when I changed jobs and I missed that thread. One issue, that is a shame. Was that the mag Nathan Chadwick was promoting on here? I wonder what he and JJ are up to these days. Certainly some good mags out there at the moment and this months Classic Cars looks like a good issue for people like you and me.

Good luck to any new car mag. However, any ‘modern classic’ title is in danger of running out of steam and becoming repetitious...may avoid MGBs but you can only feature so many Big Bumper Mk2 Golfs and UNO Turbos. Like the 2 weekly classic newspapers, the danger is that articles just go round on a loop. Also, if publishers depend on advert revenue, they will need to keep reviewing cliche cars.

Hi. I'm currently freelancing for Magneto and associated projects, Auto Italia and I'm doing bits for Classic Cars & Classic & Sportscar. Other projects ongoing.
I've a Maserati GranSport Spyder feature in the current issue of Auto Italia, and Berger's Testarossa and the Italian front-engined holy trinity coming later this year – Alfa SZ, Deltagrale and Ghibli Cup.

Miss being the editor of Strada and building something; it was going well considering we were only at the very beginning of promoting it when the axe fell due to outside issues. Maybe another time.

I have bought the first two Classic Retro Modern. Issue 2 was a huge improvement on issue 1, still to buy issue 3 but will continue to keep buying.

Not feeling brave enough to subscribe yet, after what happened with both Strada and Modern Classics.

As an aside - I love the old ads that are reproduced in C R M. Is the chap that posts them on here involved in the mag, or am I putting 2 an 2 together to make 5?

I think if you liked issue 2 then you may well like issue 3. I found issue 1 a bit boring but it’s picked up since then for me

I came across this today while filling the Morphy Richards with electrons at Oxford Services.

I am really impressed - it's a very unpretentious and very honest magazine, hardly surprising since it has a great interview with Hubnut and a cracking article on a 3l Senator.

It has the right balance between some sexy classics and man in shed stuff.

Given I don't have a Rolex AD and invite to Park Ferme nor wear my jumper round my shoulders, some of the existing magazines are all bit "aspirational", or as my old mum would say "wky" for me.

I'm leaning towards a subscription, I must admit, but which issue is the Senator article in?
