Just been sent a link to this. Some may find it interesting, or nostalgic. Just look at the prices!

I hope they still come with a hexagonal Bic biro to stick in the spool and gather up the tape when the cassette's gone crazy!

I miss those days.

For a while I was a repair tech for a company that fitted car radios, and from time to time I'd get involved with the problematic installations.

A lot of new cars didn't even have a radio back then - no speakers either, although fortunately the wiring looms were there at least.

Anyway - we fitted some real exotic stuff - the Pioneer stuff especially sounded really good and had a great feel to the controls etc.

I remember the posher Fords had that, as well as a fade/balance joystick to really lord it over the LX driving peasants. My friend's dad had a car (think it was a Mercedes) with controls by the steering wheel. He used to tell us he had a haunted radio that would turn itself up or down if you asked it nicely, this being a time where voice activation was something from a sci-fi movie.

Best car hifi I recall was in a friend's father's Volvo 740 GLE. The tape deck in that was superb - Night of the Guitars blasting out - the guitars sounded superb. Lesley West playing Theme...

Not sure if it was just the size of the car but the quality of the reproduction was excellent. The Jaguar he had later wasn't a patch on it. We thought we were cool anyway rocking up to a wine bar as 18 year olds in what was clearly Daddy's jag!

Though I had won in life when I got myself a set of pioneer 1088’s and an amp to run them.

My recent vehicular purchase is from 1995 and has an Alpine stereo with removable fascia. I had to go onto eBay and buy a special carry case for it for when I take it out of the car with me as the original case is long gone!

Talk about a trip down memory lane…

Apologies for the crap image quality - this is a much modified 1970 Mk2 Cooper S that I went to look at back in 1999, it's thought the triple stacked ICE gear was installed in the '80s or '90s....

Didn't the 80s Renault (Alpine) GTA have a huge graphic equalizer that took up most of the centre console?

Weren't Kenwood known as Trio back then - they always used to get great reviews, along with Alpine & Clarion.
