Going through some old motor racing programs and kept seeing car adverts (obviously!).

Thought it might take people back a bit -

More to come I'm sure.......

Does anyone know the significance of the "1800 TU" numberplate often seen in Rolls Royce adverts over the years?

Does anyone have pics of those old50/60s brochures with the painted pictures rather than photos? The women were always tall and elegant and wearing a hat they couldn't possibly wear in a car and the men always wore a suit. The scale was always impossible too. I had loads when I was a kid.

I think that is probably why those “drawn” adverts were done away with. Artistic licence was stretched to the full as were the lengths of some of the cars depicted. The early Mini adverts spring to mind.

Others that stick in the mind are the series of Citroen CX ads with Grace Jones

It's hard to say whether the British exagerated illustrated ads influenced the Americans or the other way round, but I've always liked the look and feel of the Pontiac ads drawn by Art Fitzpatrick and Van Kaufmann.... wonderful examples of a visual uptopia...

"TU" was the regional identifier for Chester, so cars registered in Crewe from the early 20's onward would get a "TU" plate. The tradition from the early cars must have stuck so all the press cars and Crewe demos have stuck with the well known TU plates.

They also use the "WO" plates as well.

Love this thread, first image brought back memories of early '83: parents had just bought the original Cavalier SRI in our new build house, when neighbours next door moved in they came in a Y plate Renault 18 Turbo.
