Torqueing heads?
Discussion
It depends what you mean by old; butI'll assume it's an XK engine, anything from a 2.4 to a 4.2.
They are all the same torque setting basically.
Must be done cold and taken down to 54lb/ft starting from the centre and working progressively outwards.
Suggest doing it in three stages starting at 25lb/ft.
Oil the head nuts and threads and make sure all the chrome washers are in place and the studs are properly screwed down into the block, otherwise you will get a "false" torque; i.e. tightening the nut against the stud and not onto the head.

Very OLD pre 50's if not earlier I think, it's got running boards and huge chrome headlamps, that type of OLD. I'll find out later today and let you know the model etc.
THAT old Al, now that makes it very interesting!
If it's a six cylinder it will be a MK V or a '46-'48 saloon; 2.5 or 3.5 litre.
If it's older than that it might even be a magical SS!
Either way it will be a straight six overhead valve engine with either a cast iron head or, believe it or not, solid phosphour bronze!
Let me know and I'll stretch my memory to the limit!!!

Yep! you got it, SS 1933 or 36 his son wasn't sure.
I havn't even see it yet! are they nice?
Beautiful Al!
You have to find out if it's a saloon or a sports.
If it's a saloon it could be a 1.5 litre four cylinder.
If it's a sports it will be an SS 90 which is a 2.5 litre six; or best of all an SS 100, 3.5 litre six.
Hi again James, sorry for the delay he's been away!
Got the info tonight, so it's a
SS Jag 1.5 ltr. 1937 side valve saloon 1608 cc.
I'll take a few pics shortly and post them up.
The owner said thanks for the information regarding hot or cold tightening, he also asked any idea of torque poundage on the bolts?
