I was wondering if anyone can help with identifying an old, very rotten Jaguar (S-Type I thnk), that is in woods on my parents land and in particular the engine type. My parents moved there a year or so ago and I was hoping to salvage a few bits from the engine before it all gets too rotten...

I have found the chassis plate which has the folowing info. on it:

CAR NO. P1F1341BW
BODY NO. 4F1582
ENGINE NO. 7F1519-8
AUTO TRANS NO. 15784

I was wondering if anyone knowledgeable on old Jags would be able to tell exactly what it is, it has a six cylinder twin overhead cam engine, so I guess it's an XK unit but whether it's a 3.4 or 3.8 i really don't know, as I know very little about them.

Cheers, Mike

It's a 420, as far as I can tell. It's got the 8.0 compression ratio too. See this site for more info:

www.car-nection.com/jagbase/engines1.htm

Hope that helps.

Ciao

Thanks, yes it is a 420, judging by the lights and grille from a quick google, the rest of the bodywork has done an impressive disappearing act! if anyone's interested in a few bits, mainly glass for a token sum or free, let me know.... seems a shame to let the few remaining usefule bits go to waste.

Thanks again, Mike

Don't forget to have the rear end out of it before junking the body - lots of people building things with big engines find Jag IRS very useful.

The back end is probably well past it, as it's sunk almost up to the floorpan and looks like the suspension mounts have rotted out, but it might be worth a look as the diff etc. might be ok. Will have to investigate when I have a bit more time...

Hi Mike,
as zaktoo has said, it is indeed a 420.
The car no tells you that it's an auto with a Borg Warner type 12 transmission I think, (really stretching my memory on this!)
It will be a late '66 early '67 car which means it has a cracker of an engine; much more powerful than the later cars were.
It had twin 2" SUs and different cams from the later engines.
I had several of these cars; one with 9:1 pistons and a ported head and a manual 'box and it was an utter flying machine!!
Keep the engine if you can.
