Hi,
I am a student and have a Peugeot 205 XLD as a every day car but it has just failed the MOT and the insurance is £700 a year TPFF, which is mad.

I would like another Classic car as I currently have a Rochdale GT and I like the idea of not having to pay road tax.

What I really want is a classic car with some street cred that is pre 1973 so tax free, cheap to run and insure.

I have a Austin 7 which is only £80 a year to insure Fully comp, unlimited miles, though the owners club, but a Austin 7 is not very practical for everyday driving and it is off the road aswell at present.

I am 20 so my age can be a bit of a pain when it comes to insurance.

Thanks William

Hi,
Wouldn't mind but the insurance is still quite expensive unless the owners club does a special deal. Thanks William

I actually managed to insure a mini 850 with engine mods for the same price as my austin seven. But your age may be against you. Many of the clubs have special deals.

try the kit-car market.

What about a Nova (70's Beetle based jobie with weird roof) or something like my Marlin (you can get hard-tops for them). Kit Cars are much cheaper to insure than classics either way as you know

I'd definately suggest kit cars. I know Firebond do policies for people aged 17 and over.

Go for something with a 'boring' engine - you can always upgrade it later and it'll have the flavour of something much rarer and more exotic.

Plus, they're cheaper to insure than mainstream cars largely because no-one's heard of their 'real' names and those names aren't on anyone's theft list.

Look into Mini-based cars (Midas, GTM etc), VW Beetle-based (Nova, Avante, Porsche replicas) and those based on small Fiats (MCA, Onyx Firefly, Vario etc).

Try Kit Car magazine, Which Kit magazine, www.findit.co.uk's cars/kit cars section, and try entering 'kit car' and 'replica' into the search boxes in www.ebaymotors.co.uk Cars and Classic Cars sections.

Hi,
Thanks, but I have to say that the Rochdale must much harder and more expensive to get an insurance quote for than a MGB or Spitfire or the like, so I would have to disagree that kit cars are cheaper to insure than classics if you are under 21 as so few companies will cover you for kit cars. Thanks William

That's because the Rochdale is in 'rare classic' territory, rather than 'cheap banger in a fibreglass body' territory. Shop around! The market's massive!

my mini was £285 fully comprehensive with 90bhp at the flywheel, rollcage, 7X13 supalites and racing seats & harnesses...not exactly a standard motor, and I was 19 I would get some quotes

Liverpool Victoria, just rung Graham Sykes insurance though as it's renewal time and he's just given me a quote which kicked LV's arse
