I dont think there is a limit on the age of the car, a brand new Aston could qualify. The min' age of the driver is 21, and usually there is a mileage limit, and its not like normal insurance, you do not earn any no claims bonus for example.

I used to be with RH, now with Lancaster. Worth a google.

Some of them have 'future classics' policies.......

I'm with Aon (you can find most of the Ins Cos on the net).

Chances are if there is an owners club they will have some kind of scheme with an insurance company. This will normally allow a classic policy on cars less than 10 years old, or if not a good deal for a second car policy.

My Merc is now 22 years old and is on a normal policy, but when phoning around for competitive quotes last year a couple of firms were only interested in quoting for classic cars of that age. Classic policy no good to me as the car is my daily driver and does up to 10,000 miles a year.

Classic policies will cover for high miles if you want to. The moggie is insured with unlimited miles.

For the majority of companies it is 10 years and the car has to be a second vehicle, with limited annual mileage.

You will no doubt be able to find policies to which these rules don't apply, but they won't be as cheap.

Just be careful with classic insurance.

My son bought a MKII 16v golf and got a really good quote from Sureterm dir***.

All fine and dandy until his job changed and he had to buy a different car in order to travel more miles sensibly. (I know, I know, a 16v golf is dead relaible, but actually, when they have done 150k they aren't, not when they are thrashed as they were designed to be every day ).

Sureterm Dir*** couldnt alter the policy to a Focus so, naturally he had to cancel. They tried to chase him for it and he nearly got a CCJ.

Their stance was that as he paid monthly (as most 21 year olds do) he had entered into a credit agreement and so was liable to pay the full amount.

He was never told it was a classic policy and would be unable to change his car to a 'modern' classic.

What utter idiots.

I must admit I didot realise that you don't get a refund on classic policies if you cancel until I read the small print on the renewal application form.

My car was on a 15 year old policy, I have now transfered it to 10 year old policy so that I can up grade my car this year if I want. It cost £30 mor, but IMHO opion worth it for the flexibility in the future.

I have three policies with Footman James and have had no problems. I have never had to cancel a policy, but asked about this yesterday as I have just insured a car that in theory I am try to sell. When I asked if I could get a pro rata refund when I cancelled it later, I was told that this was not possible in the first year. The implication was that if I sell the car further in the future then I would be able to cancel the policy part way through that year and get a refund.

FJ also offer very reasonablly priced unlimited mileage policies, including business use, on cars over 30 years old. The irony is that a 21-year-old car is very difficult to put on an unlimited policy!
