I am looking to get a couple of questions answered about some body work.( not sills ) on a 1967 BGT i am looking at.
The rear sprimg hanger plate has a hole in it. The ns rear wing to body joint has a little blemish and i would like to know what others have done about this problem( common i think).
thats it really. It looks a little sorry and will have a spray job. The sills were done a year ago. the clutch needs doing so the engine will be coming out for the spray work.
Any help appreciated.

I knew there was something else. under the rear lights has corrosion, again common ive heard. simple?

www.mgcars.org, register there and search the BBS archive, it's all these sorts of questions from 1997 (when the board started) so be fairly specific when you search...

If you don't find anything, they are a really helpful bunch in there!

Do you mean the rear spring front hanger? The one that is towards the middle of the car? If so it is available from Moss or Bhive etc (Part No MB69) and is quite cheap. Make sure it is fully welded in because it is under considerable stress.

there isn't a way to fix the title other than asking a mod to do it for you

Buffalo runs a GT I think, or at least a B of some description, pointed me in the right direction a few times now

Imho, at this point its far more important how well previous repairs have been done than what the original repairs entail.

the repairs have been done well. The car had a nut and bolt resto in 1996 but was owned by a lady who left it out side and didnt wash it.
The spring hanger is the rear hanger of the rear spring. near the rear bumper. There is a replacment panel avaliable from mg owners club.
I hope to go ahead with this car but will make up my mind on saturday. Thanks for the help guys and any more info pass it on.

I know you said not the sills - but it is amazing what happens with the inner sills - I always double check all work done.

I had an MGB GT that had been fully restored in 1994 - it was sold a couple of years ago. It lived out and to be honest it wasn't all bad but did need bodywork attention 8 years later

Hmmm. So the lady who left it outside and didnt care for it was the person who paid for the resto? or? You need to have a look at the bills and see if theres any previous repairs in your worry areas. Nothing harder than putting someone elses bodge right.

This i will clear up on the weekend and look over the history.(lots of it). I think what happened is the resto was done then sold to the lady , not looked after, this chap has had it for 4 years and done sills and floors, fresh mot on it and a lovely classic looking mk1. It does need a spray job as its looking tired and has a couple of blemishes. the guy has 9 vintage cars. I first thought, sounds good, no. they are all kept out in the elements and although used as often as possible they arent cared for as much as i would if they were mine.
I am letting fate rule on this car. if it is what i want and is meant to be then i will get it. im not rushing in on the purchase.

Hi - i bought a car back in Jan '02 that was bodily and mechanically relatively sound, but in the May of the same year i too had to have spring hangers done as the rust had done up to the boot floor. I think that the sills are the bits most usually look at but at the same time forget all about the spring hanger pieces. Mine went at the rear (i can't remember about the front ones) and required quite a bit of work with replacement pieces, because the metal curves both up and down, and left and right here.

In the end i got them done at a garage (it was having MOT and some other bits done there too) and the welding of these bits came to £600 (obviously all labour!)! Mostly like i say it was the tricky rear bit although i had other issues with the bill as a whole and think that was perhaps an over estimate.

Thankfully (touch wood) that was the only welding i have had to have done since...

As an aside mine stays out all winter, but is still a very good example. If you look after them they can last quite well, although it can be a constant battle as with any old car. I am starting to think i ought to find a garage for it out of the elements though...

On searching the web i found your car a lot. Sorry to see the side swipe and engine troubles. I have not gone with the car as it needs 3 wings to make it smart again. Its still on my mind and i will see what happens in the new year. Thanks to all who replied.

Hi - cheers, side swipe sor tof did me a favour as it jilted me on to get the bodywork sorted (it was never in a state, but needed som previous owner mods sorting). Following that i sorted the interior and now the engine...

I have teething troubles with the s/c - but most of these would have been sorted by now if i had my own garage as i would have been able to idly fiddle, but parking on a busy street makes this impossible.

Good luck finding one though - rest assurred with Bs there are certainly no shortage so don't rush!
