Autojumbles

I've not been to one but am increasingly interested in finding parts for a couple of my cars so was wondering which are the best ones to attend? I'm looking more for the rummage variety rather than dealer type shows where it's still possible to get a decent deal.

I'm also interested in collecting bits and bobs e.g. Old car signs etc so it would be good to see what other people have collected over the years? A bit like the 'garage thread' but geared towards classics rather than modern stuff.

I found this website which shows Malvern as being quite prolific but I'm not sure of the quality?

Newark is a good one.

Beaulieu is supposed to be about the best one in the country. It depends where you are based and how far you want to travel. I've just looked at the dates for the Newark Auto-Jumble and it's the same day as the MG and Triumph show at Stoneleigh.

I haven't been for a few years now, but the Newark one used to be one of the best on the calendar. Beaulieu is massive but less frequent (twice a year ?) whereas there used to be one at Newark every few months or so. They varied in size and have stalls outside as well as under cover in what looked like old hangars. All sorts of folks there from scrap dealers selling junk to blokes making up old style number plates while you watched. If you collect old signs, etc, then there's always one or two stalls selling genuine ones plus petrol globes, etc.

On a slightly different tack you can get a postal subscription to the magazine they hand out free at these things, "The Autojumbler", or you can just look on their website for events which may help your search.

Beaulieu (the main September event) is massive (2k+ stands) and it is impossible to see all of it in one day. The dealers and traders are well aware of values, so you are unlikely to find a bargain, but due to the large number of dealers over from Europe, you will see many parts that usually can't be found in the UK. Automobilia has become a big hobby in itself, which has driven prices for that up too.

If you just want to "rummage," you need a smaller event, but be prepared to wade through a lot of tat, toys & car boot rejects.

The next event with a reasonably-sized autojumble (but mainly car parts) is Race Retro at Stoneleigh Park near Coventry on 21-23 Feb.

I am a regular stall holder at Autojumbles . By far the best Autojumble of the year is at Beaulieu in September where bargains can be had , even on Sunday , for example I bought an Auto Art BMW Art Car diecast model on Sunday afternoon off a Dutchman for a £100 , I sold it on Ebay a week later for £350 .
From a buying perspective Newark can sometimes yield a good haul , it is usually weather dependant . The problem with Newark is it is held 11 times a year , which in my opinion dilutes the quality . The other factor which you need to take in to account is the trading that takes place before the public are allowed access , traders buying off one another , you need to be there from about 7 o'clock if you want a chance to grab a real bargain , believe me a £100 Shell enamel sign or a New Old Stock Cortina Mk1 front wing for £50 is not going to be there at 11 o'clock . At Newark you can buy early bird entry which allows you in from 8am or you could even pay the £20 for a stand if you are really serious .
Other worthwhile autojumbles are the May Autojumble at Beaulieu and the Restoration Show at Stoneleigh in October .

Beaulieu apart I've given up on them. 90% of stalls at many events seem to be traders selling stuff you can easily get anywhere, cheap Chinese tools or carboot-type stuff that should be in a skip. No doubt there are gems to be found but I can't be arsed any more. Having a chat in the internet forum which specialises in your car is more likely to reap rewards for those elusive bits.

I've found that to be the case too. After driving to Newark on several occasions in recent years, parking and paying and wandering round I've given up ever finding anything I'm searching for. Owners clubs and car forums are far quicker and less expensive ways to find stuff.

I haven't been for a few years now but everybody I speak to says that Beaulieu is no longer what it was. If you aren't there very early anything interesting will have been snapped up by the dealers, and they know what to charge. Many have stopped going to it. The JDC had an annual E-type spared day at Farnham, but with Ebay and the internet in general it is far easier for the trader's to have a lie in than stand in the cold of a February morning selling their wares. It just quietly die a death in the end. I looked for nearly a year for one special part for my E-type without finding it or even getting a sniff. That's the early Butler rear light chromes made for only the 1961 model year if any one has some, which I doubt. I honestly believe that it is more a day out these days than a way of finding rare parts.

I think ebay has had a big effect on autojumbles, carboots and general auctions.

Beaulieu is a 400 mile round trip for me. Add in accommodation and that cancels out any chance of finding a bargain. Ebay is hit and miss, I rarely use it for spares as quality is often questionable. Owners clubs are the best source nowadays.
