ZOMG 1982 Astra lepton POWAH

Out in my 1981 Lancia Beta yesterday I saw a lovely Scimitar, a decent XJS, and a dirty Stag. I was also totally blown off on the A1(M) by a 1993 Citroen BX Turbo. No surprise there, but on the way back I was unable to catch a 1982 Astra. It was this one or one just like it. 'kinnel.

I used to have a 1.6 MK1 Astra in that shade of brown. It was quite nippy.

It was obviously the gold go-faster stripe and the sunroof in the low downforce position that did for you. You never stood a chance.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. Those wheel trims alone have got to be worth 10 BHP.

Yes, and it was thought to be quick, but I think this was a more boggo model.

O.P I suspect you drove through some sort of time portal there, how the feck do you run into that much old metal in December?
I suppose the lack of frost/salt has extended things a bit this year.

Popular buy secondhand when I first started driving in the late-eighties. I had a 1.2 3dr, 1.6 GL as mentioned above, friends had a 1.6 SR and a GTE.

Quite a highly regarded hot-hatch back then, more so than the XR3i. Obviously not as highly regarded than the red german coupe thing in the background and consequently I would guess now much less common.

I'm also loving the Manta in the background too. You don't see many of those either. Mk1 Astra GTEs were (IMO) lovely looking things. Everyone forgets them because of the 'swoopy' looking Mk 2, especially the 16v which was one of the hot hatch big hitters.

Many have c20 XE conversions or 20 LET's....mine (CJX 99V)was a 1300 GLS 4 Spd....could crack an indicated 60 in 2nd gear (just before catastrophic valve bounce) and blew many a Carb'ed XR away at the Traffic Lights.... (ahh the 90's......)

Had a 1300S version of the Mk1 Astra and yes it was bloody fast, I followed it with a Mk2 1300 then a Mk2 1800GTE, the GTE didn't feel all that much faster than that Mk1 1300 did.

The Mk1 GTE was a lovely piece of kit in it's day, my Brother had one of the first and I was dead jealous. Like a lot of cars the Mk1 has aged better than the Mk2 in terms of design (IMO of of course )

Probably fitted with bigger engine from a later car as its a fairly easy conversion.

My 1300 LS ended up with around 350bhp after years of fettling.

Love the Mk1 Astra, best of the lot for me and always overlooked by the badge snobs.
