Best solution to put on a chassis to prevent rust?
Discussion
Hi,
I want to treat my chassis with something to prevent rust and protect it from the sea air at St Andrews.
What is the best solution to use?
I have tried waxol but it does not look very good.
Would hamerite work just as well?
Is there any that would protect it and last for a good 10 years or so between applications?
Thanks William

Hi William,
A number of people here use hammerite for chassis paint but then go on to waxoil over it. I personally simply use waxoil.
Assuming your chassis is rust free and clean go ahead with hammerite, you will have to inspect each year and paint patch at least owing to damage to paint whilst car is in use.
Out of interest what is your car?

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. The chassis is a bit rusty but not badly as it is only about 6 years old. The car is a Rochdale GT with a herald chassis.

POR15 is always recommended over hammerite, but i have found it peeled off quite easilyu. Now i did paint it over rust without much preparation, but then it is called Paint Over Rust-15. Also i only gave it a rough n ready coat and only 1 layer at that, so may be i am being unfair..? Also don't get the stuff on your skin as it won't come off for days and white spirit etc can't touch the stuff.
Dinitrol is better than waxoyl IMO as it flows in better. Unfortunately it flows out just as well too and i reckon half the stuff i put in last september flowed out this summer around the country! Good idea to block holes once you have sprayed it in!
