Help ID'ing a car please chaps.

Have been forwarded this from friend of a friend. Trying to ID model/make etc. Only picture they have to go on is below, not ideal but hey ho.



This is the text of the email

 We 'believe' this was a Rover 20 circa 1930 - 1948.
However, it seems to be a stripped down derivative as no running board etc and link in the top shape of the door.
The reg no was  JV 1460.

Apparently a Grimsby number. Moggs thinks this photosynthetic have been on their honeymoon.

If your contacts can identify the model that would be good.

I know some guys on here are pretty good at this sort if thing, from a quick google I am not convinced it's a Rover 20 tbh. Here is a 1935 version I found.



Similar but windscreen mounts do not come down the side and the wipers on the image are top mounted, also rear arches different.

Any idead?

Looks a bit more sporty than a Rover. Aston Martin Le Mans model ?

Not an Aston, the windscreen surround is different

They are J types, not T types.

There has to be some benefit of being an old f*rt like me.

I don't know what the car in the original post is.

Is the step plate a clue anyone?

It looks too big for any MG, even a Magnette or Magna. I'll have a punt at an Alvis Speed 20.


I know the doors look different on this saloon, but I think they look the same as the mystery car on a tourer.

has the look of a stripped down special to me (lack of running boards etc), so might be had to identify from the limited detail in the photo. Possibly a Lagonda M45 or maybe an Alvis?

I would say definitely a Rover...14 perhaps?

Thanks guys, it is tricky and as said, if the car has been made a special then who know what's standard etc.

The MG J is interesting, here is one sans running boards..



Maybe a bit small but then people used to be smaller too Not sure on the shape of the top of the doors though Rear arches different but they do have an "aftermarket" look to them.

Looked at lots of Rovers and can't find any with screens that are as good a match as the MG.

They could alway contact the Grimsby records archive office and ask them what car was allocated the registration.
I did that last year about an old motorbike I have and the the office (Chester) even provided a certified copy of the record to assist with keeping the original number.

The windscreen and mount does look more MG but I can't see any scuttle humps behind it which were pretty universal on the pre war sporty MGs. Have you got a better quality scan of the picture?

Very likely to be a pre-war circ 1936 Talbot-London.I do not have a photo because that was one of the models that I never owned, my first Talbot was during nation service in the RAF circ mid 1955.Purchased for its sporting nature and huge seating capacity to take all the lads in the billet down to the local boozer.
