Hi

Has anyone any experience of boring out wheel cylinders to take larger diameter pistons/seals? Specifically I am looking at doping thios to Riley 1.5 3/4" taling them out to 7/8" and using Mk 1 Sprite pistons/seals

By making the pistons larger you will increase the force applied to the brake, but will result in greater travel of the brake pedal. This may not be desirable.

You'd need a bigger master cylinder too.
Bit pointless too, as the standard brakes are fine, and it you want better get disks.

The sizing is not an issue as I am trying to increase the rear braking effort and will also be installing an adjustable proportioning valve to achieve the desired balance. The car already has a larger m/c and bigger front discs/calipers. Anyone bored out wheel cyliners and if so, with what results.

I haven't, but wouldn't it be easier to modify the backplate to use a larger cylinder rather than modify one? I don't know the car you're modifying, but it would strike me as better from the point of view of future maintenance at least.

Thanks for the reply, short answer....Not in this case! Long answer, axle is Midget/Mallock/Ford English/Quaife/Riley composite with cable and hydraulic handbrakes. I am just looking to know if anyone has done this type of machining of wheel cylinders and the outcome.

Fair enough, I just wondered whether you might run into trouble by making the walls too thin by boring them, where a larger cylinder would (probably) have a bigger overall casting and therefore retain the wall thickness. I guess that's one of the things you're asking.
