Been watching all the usual suspects forever, but I have noticed an awful lot of cars in the last 12-18 months just don't seem to be shifting even Escorts seem to have platoo'ed (bloody ridiculous money for something with cart springs)
A friend of mine who deals in Vintage Roll's say's he can't get enough of them,ie: people with money always have money,so what's everyone's view??

It helps if when you are trying to sell a car and you say you'll send some info about it to a possible buyer, you actually do so!

I've been waiting three days for some info about a car (one Breadvan might like) and nothing, if he'd got his finger out he might have a viewing arranged by now.

Given the sell off of big value cars in Japan and the known big bubble in classic car market - it is possible that this is te first proper signs of a slow down after which people cannot afford to wait so long to sell and lower prices and then the bubble deflates. Sure some will always be super rare ad highly valuable in a global market others can be at the opposite end and simply be an old car which isn't revered in any way apart from beng old.

Then again could be wrong.

If you have a good advert with plenty of good quality pictures & a long MOT & some tax on your classic for sale then it will sell if competitively priced.

I tried to sell my FIAT Barchetta late last summer, despite a few well worded ads, some very good piccies and parking the car in a few choice spots with the hood down and a high shine on the bodywork, I didn't get a single call or eMail.

At the time I had the car on the market I noted some of the others around the same age/mileage/price point and guess what? - they are all still in the trader and P/H classifieds now!

I do think decent reasonably presented cars will sell. But there has been a slow down right across the classic car market. I suspect that the general lack of liquidity for luxury goods in the UK is affecting the classic car market. I regularly see the same cars advertised in several different journals and not selling in any of them.

As Welshbeef said the probable result will be a fall in values. However the top end cars still seem to make fair money. It is the not very good not very classic cars that are faring badly IMO.

This will sound like a crappy thing to say but I reckon I could sell just about any car out there. You just need to price it right, there are somany crappy cars out there that are ridiculously overpriced it isn't even a joke any more.

If its good you'll good money, if it's bad you'll you'll get good money but only what it's worth.

The problem is most sellers are dreamers, which is fine as they normally have a couple of years to dream whilst their car sits unsold.

I saw it at Race Retro. Did it sell off the stand? I saw a 'provisionally sold' sign on it after the second day.

I also saw it at Race Retro. Someone has not only got themselves a unique and stylish car but also a bargain to boot (even at the full asking price).

Next project?

I've no idea of what yours is advertised for not generally the values for these but I'd wager (not being rude) not a massive cost sub £5k.

However I'd put the issue down to having two very wet summers putting x% of buyers off. Secondly for pretty much the same money you get a Saab 900 Turbo vert or S2000 or TVR Chim or MBG GT or 944 Turbo/S2 and I guess this is where those looking for a soft top may prefer those i have listed. Also LHD puts off a lot.

Also your car always sold in low numbers in the UK - the MX5 being the original direct competitor. Now for similar cash you get a heap load more options.

Thanks for that. Yes it sold off the stand and I believe it was a bargain.

I have regrets, but it had to go. I simply couldn't afford to keep it as a toy and my next project will probably be more touring orientated.

Out of the blue I've been contacted by a dealer who has a client looking for an XKSS and asked if I was prepared to sell mine. The price was interesting, but I think I'll have a summer or two out of it before parting with it. Still, the price did make me sit up and think though, so there is still money out there for the right car it seems.

A 'bargain' will always sell.

I don't see that there is much selling at the moment but if that's the case, how come there are so many dealers still in business?

I think that there's a lot of 'sitting on the fence'
and waiting for the right buyer (if you are selling), or car (if you are buying).

The bulk of classic cars are either "barn find" snotters dragged out of a field, or imported stuff, "just needs registering" or other ones that "just need a bit of tlc"
Most people want to buy a car that is up and ready to go, well presented, serviced, MoT'd and taxed. How many cars have you tried that have b all petrol in them?
I am selling the Esprit soon, but it is having a service at a main dealer first, even though I could do it in my w/shop. That, hopefully , gives the punter some confidence in the car. along with it being clean, mot'd and taxed with a large file of history.

Good cars, well presented, at a sensible price will always sell. Too many owners think they can ask dealer prices for their p&j...

Not a top end car by any means but just sold the other half's Herald. A 70,000 mile never welded, three owners daily driver with a few sensible upgrades.
Classified ad' on eBay, good photo's, thorough description and a sensible price (slightly more than what we paid for it five years and 30,000 miles ago but mechanically improved over that time). Took three days to sell.
I've just bought an '83 Morini (Italian motorcycle) that was for sale for only about three days and a '55 Ariel via an auction on eBay. I'm still seeing 'bikes that I looked at over a year ago - some folk are just being greedy and asking too much, anything will sell at the right price.
I recently offered a private seller 80% of his asking price for a nice example of a very mundane motorcycle - three eBay listings and a couple of classifieds later he still has it. He even relisted on eBay with a "Buy it now" that was nearly twice the value of his highest previous bid...

E-types are selling, XK120,140's are selling also Low mileage Xj-S, Mk II's. Basically any classic Jag with provenance, originality or a good/sympathetic restoration. The top end of the market is as bouyant as ever I understand.

I reckon a lot off this ^^ is the OH telling them to sell that "bloody motorbike/car", then they advertise it for a high price and it's, "sorry, dear just can't sell it". Job done!

BTW, which Morini did you buy? Sold my Kanguro on ebay very quickly. Great bikes....
