Prototype Jaguar Mk10

My well known love for Jaguar, stems from an adolescent, myopic view, that the best car in the world was of course, the one that Dad had (isn't that true for all of us?)

I was very lucky and privileged to be afforded a comfortable childhood. Dad's black MK10 was bought, nearly new, from a Director of the Smith and Nephew drug company; it was, but one, of many "nice cars" in my childhood "street/avenue"

There were two Aston's DB4 and 5, two Alvis TD21's,one that escapes me that had a Wilson Pre-sector-(the lady showed me how it worked (aged 12/13yr old (?)) a Bentley S2, Bentley R Type a Jensen FF and innumerable other Jags including XK120/140/150 MK2's two other Mk10's and at least three S Types'.

The Jaguar owners loyalty to the brand extended to me seeing the first brand new V12 E Type being bought upon launch a few doors away (primrose yellow convertible), the first XJS in Leyland Red, Dad's purchase of the first XJ12 in BRG; I'm sure you get the drift..


The Mk10 however, of course naturally held it's childhood tug for me as many an hour was blissfully and innocently spent in the garage washing and polishing and Dad of course never objected! (surprise, surprise )

Today of course I have a Jag, one of many along the years, but my ears always prick up when I alight on the Mk10.

So if you pardon the pre-amble and momentary loss of focus and into prose and nostalgia then I give you the You Tube video that I found this evening.

I think upon reflection that it's brilliant, not just for being a Jag, but also I can't think of many cars' (read Classic) that we get an insight into their build story.

Keith Adams across on AR Online does an excellent job of telling the story of XJ40 and a few others so they are out there but rare methinks.

Final thought/ramble/why, I casually started noting the RW Reg numbers used by the Coventry manufacturers some time ago (I know it sound dreadfully like sad train-spotting doesn't it? lol!) anyway.. 5437 RW and 5438 RW feature here (can't believe I've just written that!

Not a mk10 but at the age of 18 I bought an 8 year old mk9 for the grand sum of £35.00. With 50000 or so miles and two owners it was a magic car but not untypical of the sort of car available in the late 60's. Cost me an additional £35 to fabricate a twin exhaust system using mini cooper glass packs to replace the original system which disintegrated when I first drove the car.

There's a quite healthy looking but i think unused burgundy Mk10 in a private car park in West Byfleet, i hope it has a safe future.

I have been lucky enough to do many road miles in a race Mk7, and hound it round Goodwood too, there is something very special about travelling sideways in a 300 horsepower cathedral with Webers and an open exhaust! Love them to pieces

I love watching the big Jags round Goodwood, especially when an A35 nips between them mid bend

Having driven that Mk7 round Goodwood, what followed was one of my best passeger rides ever in the same car, as we went in pursuit of the powerful peanut from a standing start in the pit lane, taking a couple of laps to hunt it down and pass, simply fantastic stuff! Big sideways in fourth down through Fordwater each time.

I too have a soft spot for Jags of that era from my childhood.

Next door neighbour had a Mk X auto, dark blue with blue interior, and I used to love getting a chance to go for rides in it, with that lovely Jag aroma of wood, leather and wool that the Jags of that era had. I was always allowed to press the starter button to fire up that 3.8 XK, a great treat for a small lad at the time )
As a small boy I also got to have occasional rides in Dad's 'company cars' of the day (black Met.Police S-Type area cars )

Sorry I can't help you, I've got the same two photos that you have, which I believe were taken at Birmingham.

I seem to have a memory for car Reg No's even when I've only fleetingly seen them. (Hence my recent interest in MWK 22G)

My interest in the RW Series came about from the Mike Hawthorn thread and the E Type 5600 RW that was recovered back to Trophy Garage. I then remembered that the publicity shot for the MK10 at Wappenbury Hall was also an RW Reg-6100 RW, so I figured the E Type was a really early one.

I did find reference to the E Type on XKE Data but wasn't entirely convinced as to its efficacy.

I know you can churn out quite a few hundred E Types down a production line during the course of a week but the RW Reg and its proximity in sequence to Jaguar numbers made me question- I think that it was a very early car that was destroyed and “perhaps” someone has repatriated the chassis number. I’ll probably get a gentle reprimand from Breadvan shortly telling me I can’t say things like that on a public forum – lol!

Heh! Maybe it’s a bit like Triggers Broom, as someone on here recently said lol! I’m a bit long in the tooth and not so an**ly retentive, having seen quite a few body shell changes in my time (not by me I hasten to add!) so I’m not going to p**dle on someone’s bonfire if it makes them happy....

Back to Mk10’s. – yes, so I only started to casually note numbers down on my laptop notebook and just dropped in the occasion pic if I happened across one; I only have about a dozen of them and one of those is a Hillman Imp 5846 RW

What’s your interest, if you don’t mind me asking?

I did enjoy the video thanks and went off to our version of ebay - trademe and found this among the listings Jaguar XJ6 460 BigBlockV8 (I know it's not a Mk10 but I wanted to share it)


I also found a 420G for sale at $22,500 about 12,500 pounds. Is that a fair price?
