1970 England World Cup Squad & Their 1600E Cortina's
Discussion
Hi Alan, Some great stuff there and quite spooky really.
A month or so ago a chap came to inspect/service our central heating ready for winter etc.
Upon seeing my Vixen on the drive we got talking cars. He told me he had recently been to a property where in the garage was a unusual white mk2 cortina.
The owner told him it was one of the World Cup cars once used by Franny Lee. According to the current owner, a year or two back F Lee got to hear of this car and came to see it.
After viewing the car and recounting many tales and escapades, Lee asked the owner to "name your price". In reply the owner said "you could,nt afford it Franny"
So at least this car is still around, Oh to be able to turn the clock back eh!

That's brilliant. Can you imagine today's useless cretins posing with a selection of Mondeos?
It wasn't that long ago football players had a more realistic taste in cars. At the back end of the 80's a friend used to work in the bar at Norwich city when they were up in the first division and the car park was full of the players XR3i's.eccles said:

These days they'd get one of those for the Phillipino cleaning lady. "Mr footballer, he no home....." *- No racism intended.

1600E s were sought after cars in 1970 , I know as I was there.
Definitely a hit in the seventies and can remember my younger brother owning one in the early eighties when they were still a relatively desirable car. Interesting to note that two of the West Ham players appear less than impressed in the 1st colour photo above, B. Moore looks indifferent and G. Hurst is yawning. Presumably their Clubs proximity to Dagenham meant they had seen more than enough of the Cortina and were desperate to get back to the training ground.....If only we had done better in the 70 world cup , those cars would have instantly collectable , as it turned out most were returned to Ford after their one year useage and sold on through the used car outlets. The reason I know this is someone spotted my 1600E (see profile picture)and said "I used to own Geoff Hursts old one" , it used to live in the back roads of Camberley for many a year. Definitely a unique set of photographs !
Great thread.
We were a far better team in 70 than 66. We should have met Brazil in the final. We played them earlier on and lost 1-0, but were unlucky to lose.
We were certainly a better team than W Germany who knocked us out in the quarters. Cruising 2-0 up with 20 mins to go, Sir Alf takes of Bobby Charlton to save him for the semi that we never reached. Shocking decision. I always thought Sir Alf was a vastly over rated manager. And arrogant with it.
That game we lost to the Germans on 14/6/70 was the last game we'd play in the finals for 12 yrs.
As for giving the squad 1600Es, you'd think they'd have stretched to the Lotus Cortina.

Cant be many white 1600Es left now. Not sure but I think ermine white was only used on S2 1600Es from late 68 to late 70.
My dad had JSO 300H in Fern green for a few years when it was still nearly new.
Does anyone know where 1600Es were exported to? Yes I know it's an anorak question but am interested.

My mum had a white Mk II - MTP 27G. Not an E though. Just a 1600 I think. Might even have been a 1300, too long ago to remember. My old man bought it from the Brighton area in about 1972/73 after selling her 1960 Beetle to someone he worked with for £40! XCG 465 ... 6v electrics, no fuel gauge etc.
My sister went to the flicks in Southend in the 'tina and it was nicked - she was popular ...
Edit: it WAS A 1600 ...
The vehicle details for MTP 27G are:

Vehicle Excise Duty rate for vehicle
6 Months Rate £121.00

Thx for post nalaeroom. Notice the different steering wheel on the red 1600E. Capris assembled in Bangkok! Wow. Reminds me of that James Bond film with police early-Mk3 Cortina GXLs or GTs in Japan.
Ok, next question - does anyone have a 2-door 1600E? I have seen lhd versions a few times over the years but I have read that some right-hand-drive cars were built too in very low numbers.

Stumbled across this thread whilst doing some research, my Dad was England's Trainer Coach at both the 1966 & 1970 World Cup's, he was issued with one of these Cortina 1600E's, Registration No was GWC30H
As a 19 yr old at the time I managed to clock up a few thousand miles in it whilst he was away in Mexico for a few weeks! Petrol was also free via Esso as they were running the World Cup Player Coins promo at the time
Was heartbroken when the car went back, should have bought it really but he got a contract with Lancia and replaced it with Lancia Fulvia in 1971
Here is a photo of Dad with the car outside our house in Leeds in 1970
