Whitehall are currently looking at ways to reduce unnecessary 'red tape' for the DVLA so this looks like a good time to strike!

whilst I agree entirely with your logic, I very much doubt they will agree to remove SORN as it's a nice little earner when folks forget to renew the declaration.
Apart from the revenue from fines I've always been puzzled by the logic behind SORN in an age where Mot, road fund licence and insurance cover are all on computer databases which could be easily cross referenced by plod when they see a suspicious looking car/driver on the road.

I thought the govt had announced they planned to do this and make SORN a permenant until a tax disc is obtained declaration.
It should be abolished entirely, since it is implicit in not renewing tax anyway. There is no need to make it explicit, other than to increase the number of civil servants employed in Swansea.

as a classic car owner and user can I offer a different view
not all government agencies have got it in for you personally or as a group of whatever
some classic car owners can be a bit lazy or amiss with their documentation and sticking strictly to all laws - certainly some laws should not apply to them but only to others

the t...... have just fined me for Not Sorning a bike ( that a cowboy recovery agent and Essex Police ) sent for smelting after I was involved in a very serious rta on it . The bike was newly taxed just before the accident and I never asked for a refund of my hard earned .
I am refusing to pay their £80 quid fine and can't wait to stand in front of of a hopefully reasonable judge to explain the circumstances !!

Where does all this information come from? - The DVLA records of registered cars and SORNED cars.
If there was no SORN any more, you wouldn't have an "accurate" record of how many cars were left in the country!
Frankly this petition sounds a bit pointless - in reality, how hard is it to remember to send off a form once a year?
How much does it put people out to send off a form once a year?
If the car was on the road you'd have to go through getting the Road fund license sorted once a year (be it free or not), so where's the difference?

As a result of the Road Transport Red Tape Challenge – the government wide process to get rid of unnecessary, burdensome and overcomplicated regulation – the Department for Transport is:
- Improving the regulation surrounding the notification process for vehicles that are not in use on the road (Statutory Off Road Notification or SORN). Once drivers have notified the DVLA that their vehicle is SORN, they will no longer have the burden of annual SORN renewal.
So, yet another pointless petition, this time asking for something that's already being done. Mr Stacey should have done a bit of homework before submitting his petition, and maybe those who accepted his petition should have done some homework too, and e-mailed him back to say no need as it's being done.
