I believe that's the only way to actually upgrade your radio, anything else will involve variations on swapping it out for something else (even if the casing stays the same, nothing inside will be).
I use this on my Stag, connected up to two modern speakers in removable mountings in the back. It works fine, radio works as it should, no holes for speakers etc. You are limited to using the internal amp, so you have mono and it sounds slightly thin but it's OK. This could give you DAB, you'd have to have an in car-DAB player and connect it up. Not too pretty or easy to use I'm afraid.
If you don't want to do that you could do what I did in my Jaguar, which was to leave the original stereo alone, and hide an amplifier (or another head unit, if you want radio) somewhere, (mine was on the parcel shelf under the glovebox) and run a lead somewhere for iPod or whatever.
Those are really the only two options if originality is very important top you. If you go the second option the old stereo still works exactly as it should.
Otherwise, as suggested, swap it out for something modern, it doesn't have to actually look modern.
