Not going to mention the exact car but it will not be to hard to work it out when it comes up for sale.

A pre 1982 automatic Aston Martin Vantage I owned a couple of decades ago is coming up for sale shortly. I bought it as a 60K mile car and then found on checking with previous owners that the car had been clocked back from 160K. Quite an achievement for a car of this ilk and year. Sold it on to a specialist Aston dealer having told him the discrepency....and it was put up for sale at you guessed it 66K miles.

Do not want to kebab any sale, but if the car is advertised as low mileage for year it will be difficult as the specialist trade knows the car's story and customer's should expect better. Flipside is that the clocking was a long time ago and it could well have had a full rebuild since.

NB: There was also talk of it being destroyed by an AM director and rebuilt at the factory, but never managed to substantiate this.

PM me and I'll ask the trader what he means by low mileage for year and check that it is the car you think it is

traders usually have a disclaimer about the mileage but this is being sold as a low mileage so there meeds to be some basis for this claim

I'd give the dealer a chance to market it fairly. If you see that they don't then I would get in touch to give them 24 hours to remedy it. Then you'll have given them the benefit of the doubt twice. If they continue then I'd hang them out to dry in a very public way. Its such a small market you wouldn't have too much difficulty.

As Auric Goldfinger said, "Once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, three times is enemy action."

ETA - I've just re read and see they're already on strike 2. Make the call and then see what happens. You owe it to any prospective purchaser and I'm sure you'd appreciate same.

Definately. How would you feel if you bought a clocked car and then found out that someone had info which could have prevented an expensive mistake?
A dealer who advertises a car for sale knowing or suspecting that the quoted mileage is 100k out is not to be trusted. Mileage disclaimer and caveat emptor notwithstanding you should do the right thing here. Why would you not?

I thought that was from "Diamonds are Forever" (the book).

Why would 'Auric Goldfinger' be in 'Diamonds are Forever'?

As to which book the quote is from, the clue's in the surname!

The quote is from Goldfinger (the book).

Bond first takes on Goldfinger at bridge at a beach club (and wins), takes Goldfinger on at golf (and wins) and then shows up at GF's country pile for a snoop. He is caught and GF says the above vis their 'chance' meetings.

Well, if it had been in 'Diamonds' (which I will accept it was not) then it would not have been the gentleman named that first said it. That was what my initial statement intimated.

Someone should mention and Aston at this point to bring the thread back on topic. Now, if only I could think of a link between the two....

I don't remember that quote being in the film, though. Apparently, in the book, which I read a great many years ago, he attributed the saying to a Chicago gangster. It was American idiom that made me think it came from the 'Diamonds' book.

This could just be me but is anyone else now worried that the dodgy car dealer mentioned above could actually be Hugo Drax, Auric Goldfinger, or, heaven forbid, Ernst Stavro Blofeld himself?

This kind of dirty dealing stinks of SMERSH or SPECTRE.

Personally, if the proof is there, I'd wait until the dealer markets the car (with no doubt a "warranted mileabe") and then report them to trading standards or whatever they call themselves. The dealer, having been notified as to the full history of the car, deserve no less.
