I have just gone ahead and bought what I think is an SU HS2 (1.25") from a mini or moggy minor to replace the knackered Zenith carb on my 2.25 petrol Land Rover, like so:

The only slight problem is, the air filter mount on the SU is a flange. The air filter connection on a zenith is just a big hole in the top that the hose from the oil bath clamps over with a jubilee clip, like so:

(please excuse the mud!)

Short of machining a flange with a conical bit of pipe welded to it, does anyone have an idea how to go about this?

I have seen these adaptor pieces on a few ruvvah v8s:

but I have no idea what the part number or description is, or whether it will fit the smaller carb I have. can anyone help?

thanks matt

A few tears ago I had a Rover SDI engine, the flanges look familiar. No idea whether they would fit the smaller carb.
try Rimmer Bros, they do bit for BL/ BMC cars, may be lucky

I really wouldn't have thought a single HS2 would be enough carb for a 2.25 engine - even the 1275 Minis which made 65hp used two of them. What you want is an HS6 or HIF44; they are good for around 80hp each as a maximum which is about right for the application.

A little digging has indeed confirmed that they are the connector that goes between the big 180 degree air filter elbows and the carb flange, on a rover v8.

As for the size, I have been told that it does just about work on a 2.25 engine, and is much more of an economy fitment than a power fitment - which suits me as economy is what I'm after.

A friend of mine has a 1.75" one on his, and whilst it certainly shifts you can also watch the fuel gauge move whilst doing so!

Hi
one thing that's worth remembering is that the Range Rover prototype used SUs as they are better, but had to put the evil petrol sucking strommies on when it was discovered that one carb died when leaning over a long way off road. Putting four metro carbs on a V12 E type works well but most of those don't go off road!

Hi peter,

I rarely take the old bus off road these days, and when I do it's hardly strenuous or steep stuff. She's destined to do fewer and fewer miles a year now before getting overhauled to show standard and kept as a timewarp condition show queen
