Porsche 356 price and driving experience.

Hi all
Been looking at buying a 356 for a bit of fun over the summer and the prices appear to be on the up.

Quite fancy a coupe as the roadsters (good ones) have gone crazy recently on price.

There are a lot of restoration projects coming in from the states,but would like either a 356b or 356c in driveable and usable condition.

The 356b appears affordable but am wondering if it would be wiser to go for the 356c which has better brakes (discs)

Had a drive in a 356b yesterday and it was great and obviously very old school as it is knocking on 50 years old and was alarmed to find it had no seat belts and absolutely nothing in the way of creature comforts but i thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

What is the general opinions on one as a useable classic,all comments welcome.

Has anybody spotted a good one for sale ?

An Exellent Useable Classic. Very practical, Rugged, Easy to maintain. And so so cool. Ivory with a Red interior , or Silver/red, Black with Red would be My Ideal Colour combo.
Go for it now, they are creeping up in price. A US Import would be ideal.

The late, great Dennis Jenkinson ( Motor Sports European Corespondent ) ran an Early one and travelled All over Europe in it, racking up A Huge mileage, right up until 65, when he bought an E Type. He decided on an E when late one night, he was unable to shake off the Head lamps behind him and when he pulled over realised it was an E.
He loved his 356. His Book , i think its called A Passion For Porshe is well worth getting.

You might consider a replica? I believe the Chesil ones are fairly well respected.

Found quite a few american imports on offer,but would like a restored example,looking at a couple this week.
Most parts appear to be available,including tool kits at £2000 ! and most parts are USA sellers.

Think i have done the deal today on a gorgeous 1963 356b super 90 with sunroof,absolutely lovely and very well restored in a non concourse but useable way .

Very nice once you get used to foot pedals especially brake being high,and allow plenty off stopping distance (drum brakes all round)
It feels very connected with the road and sounds great.
Steering has very direct feel,but you do keep getting reminded it is nearly 50 years old!,and it feels very odd to drive without seat belts,but as it is exempt am going to keep it that way.

I really like it,and will post more as and when this foul weather clears away and i get chance to use it properly and open the electric sunroof which was probably the biggest surprise as it works as smoothly and quietly as any modern one i have used.
