Hi, Just wondered if anybody can positively identify the dynamo/power steering pump in the photo'. It looks like I may have to rebuild the dynamo side - can't keep begging jump starts off passing Volvos - oh the shame of it...
Before anyone asks, I don't know the original fitment as it is on my 1936 Austin hot rod which was built in the late seventies (so, a clue to the age of the donor). Most of the running gear is Jaguar but the steering and suspension is a custom built four bar with a dropped tube by Nick Butler. I identified the steering box as a Saginaw unit but have been told recently that the pump/dynamo may be Vanden Plas 4litre. I've asked on several forums to no avail so far. Can anybody tell from the photo'? If not it'll have to be the washing machine bits again!
Sorry about the picture quality but I'm loathe to remove it from the car until I'm in a position to sort it out properly. Many thanks for any info'. John.

its a combined dynamo/ps pump??

That must be rare- I've never heard of it. If you dont want to remove it to identify, can you use a mirror on a stick to read any markings? I would expect them to be on one of the ends.

The dynamo looks like a Lucas unit , if so there will be a 5 digit part number stamped on it and also the model type . These combined dynamo / power steering pumps were fitted to a number of different cars including Jaguar and BMC . Buying an exchange unit would not be too difficult for this type of Dynamo .

I'd go with this.
I'd simply remove the item if you can keep the p/s hoses attached and check part no. (may not be too much of a problem to repair if the problem is brushes or internal or poor connections, even if you don't repair it - it's not the usual 'covered in grime' at least it's nice and clean!)

This was a relatively common dynamo in the 50s and 60s spoodler. It had an extended armature spindle with a slot machined in the end that drove the PAS pump.

From memory it was fitted to Jags Mk8, 9 and early 10, Mk 2, Rover 3 litre and Humber Super Snipe.

The 2 units function entirely separately, so you should be able to have the dynamo rebuilt and then refit the pump. Don't forget to check your control unit though; these failed much more regularly than the dynamos.

Thanks for the replies so far. I have replaced the control box but it's difficult to get a steady output from the dynamo to set it up correctly, there are one or two other issues as well. This combined dynamo/pump arrangement isn't one that I'd come across before so wasn't sure if they were common or specific to one model.
As for markings, I should have looked last time I had this out - it's quite a tight fit between the chassis and engine and surprisingly heavy to handle in a confined space, but as remarked I do try and keep it clean in there.
And Jith - that makes sense, majority of the running gear was off a MK10 Jaguar (although the engine is now XJ6) so the pump could well be off that model, entirely different to the XJ6 set up that I'm familiar with so I'd sort of ruled out a Jaguar item.
Again, thanks for the advice - it gives me an idea of where to look for more info. Cheers, John.

jith + 1. Not difficult to take apart and at the worst exchange units are avaailable.
