But perhaps you can do better though.

The weather being clement, I took the E-type for a spin, parked it up and went into the bar for a coffee. Spotted someone looking around the car and in particular at the wheels, this with a quizzical expression. Now understand we are in France, but when he asked where the make "UNDO" came from since he had never heard of it before, I had a hard job not to split my sides.

Pretty good smile

Once had a family group walk past my Turbo R, and 'Grandad' (I assume) was quite vocal in his excitement at seeing the car "It's a Buick, a Buick, it's a Buick" he kept repeating.

They both start with a b BG, and the engine and gearbox wouldn't look too out of place under a GM bonnet. hehe

At the recent Top Gear Live event:

Her: What's that green car, it's lovely
Him: I don't know, I'm not an expert. It is very nice though, isn't it.

Car in question was a Miura. Stupid is a bit harsh, but I was perplexed. Do remember this was a top gear show so you'd think most people who had paid the £50+ or whatever it was to get in would be petrolheads. As baffling as the people who went to see Damian Rice, talked through the whole thing and left before he did 'Blowers Daughter'.

They could also have looked at the handy plaque in front of the car which described what it was.

I used to get comments in my X1/9 - mostly "What is it?" / "Fiat" / "Oh"

but my favourite was when I pulled up at the local motor factors in my 92 TVR Griffith. Now you have to understand there is a lot of friendly rivalry between Griffith and chimaera owners - whose cars share essentially the same mechanicals but which apparently project very different images (chestwig / golf come to mind).

So imagine my amusement when I walk in and the guy behind the counter says "Nice Chimaera mate"...

Lots of people walk round the Jensen, and it's not until they read the 'Interceptor III' badge on the grille that they know what it is.

I quite often get questions such as 'Did you have it made into a convertible?', and when people learn it's got a 440cu in V8, most people ask 'how many miles to the gallon does that do?'

Best comment ever though was an old boy in his eighties, an ex banker (when bankers were respectable people), and quite obviously mixed with some well off people over the years. He asked what the car was, then said "A Jensen Interceptor? Half a Crown to talk to you then lad!"

Driving a Monaro obviously get the "Oi mate, what's that?" comment quite often, usually followed by "What's that then, three litre?". On learning 5.7 litres usually get some equally daft and wildly inaccurate assumption regarding single figure MPG.

Audi Quattro. Variously "What is it?", "Nice body kit", "Is that a Scirrocco?" or most commonly of all "Nice Quattro, my mate had one of the short ones." I don't know whether this latter is an attempt to put me back in my place or not.

TR6. "Nice Stag." FFS. It even says "TR6" on the side.

The MPG thing really annoys me! Of course it uses a lot of petrol, its a 7.2 V8!

Have this in respect of the Droopsnoot... The younguns look round it (I am pained to call em Chavs, but often that's what they are) nod appreciatively, see me coming back to my car and "Nice kit car, mate."

In their defence, once upon a time I could tell you what a car was purely from the light clusters, or from seeing a profile of the front or rear. These days they are all the same to me, but somehow, the Chavs know the newer stuff.

When I had my Citroen BX someone mentioned that Citroens were stupid having such a a complex hydraulic suspension just so they looked cool when they're parked up.

I know my dad gets most offended when people ask him if he's had his 1933 Morris Cowley Four since new. If he needed to be 17 to drive it, that would make him born in 1916, so he'd be 95 now! He's 75 and fit as a fiddle, but he hates when people make that assumption. That would be like someone thinking I'm 62 now, so I can see his point!

Many moons back when I sold my 2CV a young girly was interested in it. She brought along her, obviously knowledgable, boyfriend who, keen to demonstrate to her that he knew his stuff, pronounced that the head gasket had gone as there was steam coming out of the exhaust...

Out in the old racer (no roof windscreen or doors), I am always asked:

Them - "What happens if it rains?"

Me - " I get wet"

But once on a rally in ireland in a 1904 Cadillac.

Him - "What is it?"

Me - "Its a Its a Cadillac, it was built in 1904"

Him - " And what date would that be then?"

Me - " Ermm 1904"

In that case, since the purpose of the PH is (mainly) to talk about cars, then the whole forum is pointless.

Old Jags are hardly exotic metal in these parts.
