Fiat 509 (1927)

A contemporary of the Fiat - although it looks like something from a decade earlier, the 510cc Mauser Monotrace. Early disc brake technology evident there ?!?

After all the agricultural/heavy plant stuff - something plus petite.

1935 Simca 5 Gordini. A class winner at Le Mans that year (OK it was the only car in its class). More significantly the smallest capacity car to ever run at LM - 568cc.

Take a crashed 1961 BRM P57 F1 car (chassis 571). Cut it in half, add a tube-frame 2 seater mid-section and a Rover gas turbine as motivation.

The 1963 Rover BRM. Not the prettiest car to grace La Sarthe but it plodded along for 24 hours and proved a point.

Motor sport magic.

One of those forgotten outings. Gilles Villeneuve in the 1979 Giro d' Italia. Lancia Beta Monte Carlo, co-driven by Walter Rohrl.

That would have been worth seeing…

One of the most iconic engines of all time, the BMW boxer twin. Powering motorcycles for 8 decades.

This is the latest - still at 1170cc - which happens to be 585cc per cylinder…

…a bit of a struggle with some of these numbers - I'm looking forward to the 700's when March Engineering Ltd will take us in a blink from 701 to 793.

The greatest LSR car of all time - John Cobb's 1939 Railton Mobil Special. Twin Napier Lion W12 aero engines, a proper motor car. 592 Km/h over a timed mile.

The 2nd photo shows the extensive safety features including the deformable structures - Cobbs' legs.

Another Matchless - the G11 from 1957, twin pot 593cc. Also sold as an AJS, so badge engineering was alive and well even then and the Matchless wasn't necessarily Matchless.

The original Fiat Abarth 595 SS which, obviously, had a 594cc engine.

SS or otherwise known as an Eseeesee which, for a simple old man like me, is also confusing.

It's a Group 6 car and looks like a Lola - but it is the very rare and very neat Swiss-built Cheetah G601.

Cheetah-ing, the 601 was updated to become the 602.

In which case we're on to 603 and perhaps a shy retiring Tatra…
