Arguably the father of the ICE, certainly a pioneer thereof. Trained as a gunsmith but the automobile beckoned.

Founder of Daimler-Benz. Gottlieb Daimler, born in 1834.

..and then along came Wilhelm (Maybach) in 1846. Orphaned at the age of 10 he went on to complete this great triad of German auto-designers.

That’s him second from the right in a Daimler-powered pleasure boat.

Ansaldo briefly shone in the Italian sunshine during the (19) 20’s. They produced some very competent motor cars based on a technically-advanced 1847cc OHC engine.

Perhaps they could have risen to challenge FIAT but Mussolini did a hatchet job on them in 1927.

Lancia Sport Prototipo Zagato from 1964. 148BHP from a boxer 1848cc engine.

The bulges on the bonnet are air scoops for the carbs. The inlets of these face rearwards for some reason…

The first ever Goodwood FoS. Having paid the five bob entry fee the crowds clamour to watch John Surtees attack the Hill - all 1866 metres of it.

Long before the Wimbledon & Henley crowd invaded and the corporate world took a slice. I miss those early days…including the apres-ski at the Duke of Cumberland (just North of Midhurst). A favourite hostelry of Mike Hawthorn apparently.

An unsung hero.

Kaye Don - born in 1891. Served in the RFC during WW1. Took to m’cycle racing after hostilities ended but soon swapped to four wheels. Became the Brooklands Outer Circuit lap record holder before taking a stab (unsuccessfully) at the WLSR at Daytona. The consolation prize was taking the WWSR in 1931 at Lake Garda.

Raced on during the 30’s with MGs & Alfas in particular. Post WW2 there was still time to set up the Ambassador Motorcycle Co.

Achieved 4 score years and 10 before steering into park ferme in 1981.

WW1 is just a couple of months away. 1914 and we’re at the Brickyard. Frenchman Rene Thomas wins in (or on?) a Delage.

200 laps, a whisker over 6 hours at an average of >82mph.

That’s what I call a motor race.
