Amusing that coins were deemed sufficiently valuable for the purchase of fuel back then yikes
My first Mini (a 1000) cost £9 to brim in 1989, I know it's all relative but, er, yikes!
Early 80’s...I’m sure that it hit the £1 a gallon. yikes
Ramsbury garage in Wiltshire has the oldest working petrol pumps in the country.

I'll hopefully be attending a tour at the Ramsbury brewery in the spring. They produce some fine ales that luckily one of my locals has on tap regularly. That garage will have to be visited at the same time smile

IIRC it hit £1 a gall in 1979 - I went to the US then and they were upset that it was $1 a gall - exchange rate was $2.11 to £1.

I wonder how many of those Scarab trucks still exist.

I think the site was cleared a year or two ago.

Google Earth imagery date 2017 would suggest that the pumps had gone by then but the sheds were standing. As that was 5 years ago I expect it has all gone by now. frown

Sorry...Saw a FB link this morning, that was eleven years ago.
There is a photo that has the garage still standing, but sadly no petrol pumps at all.

Bloody hell. I was there a few years ago and it was just over $2 on the east coast. Was about $4 on the west though and $5 in Hawai'i.

Permission was granted in 2017 for a house on the site, and a further pp has just been issued for a ‘detached outbuilding’ ancillary to Westfield House. From the plans it looks like the adjoining property owners have bought it and intend to build a car port, workshop, games room, art studio, wood store etc on the site

I remarked to my Dad that I was surprised if they were still in use...
Especially with today’s rules & regulations.
I did see Henry Cole turn an old pump into an EV charge point.
( Looked pretty good actually).

Early 70’s, my Dad worked in a village garage.
The attendant sat in his little ‘Swiss Chalet’ style hut in between the pumps... & of course, the fluid levels were checked as part of the service.
(The windscreen would be washed too... if requested)scratchchin
