There was talk that £500k is the new normal, but that's far from the case - only a few weeks after the "big one" another one went for £200k and they seem to be dropping back from that even - as the one above shows.
Lesser (i.e. higher mileage) 500's are back in the 120k region again seemingly.
The 600k auction was a one-off.........two high roller collectors were in a 'my wallet is deeper than yours pissing contest' it was never going to be 'the norm'.Lesser (i.e. higher mileage) 500's are back in the 120k region again seemingly.
I'd expect this one owner, low miles Moonstone car to be realistically in the 150-175k price bracket. £350k is as people have mentioned typical KGF Disneyland pricing.
But, price it at £350k, and someone who's really wants it might think they are getting a bargain, if they offer £200k...... so you can see why KGF price where they do.

I've had my RS Cosworth 18 years next month, the prices are bonkers and there are cars changing hands without even being advertised.

Well, I don’t get it at all TBH. Ridiculous price IMO.
And yet, its still almost half the price that similar mileage black RS500 sold for at auction a couple of years ago, and this one is Moonstone and with probably better ownership history.I'm surprised given what that black one went for at auction, that the owner of this one didn't put this through an auction as well in the hope of a similar half million + bid....?
I remember back in 87/88 there were stories of quite a few RS500's being bought with the sole aim of being tucked away as investments, long before people thought of them as such, and people were being laughed at such a suggestion. Fast forward 30+ years and those that did so that are having the laugh now as they sell up and trouser a lot of cash.....
The RS500 would have to fetch way more than £350k today to have been a great investment.

I had a couple of 2.8i Capris in the 80s but by about 1990 Cosworths became uninsurable. I was gutted as that was my obvious next step in Fast Ford ownership!
Then in the mid 90s I went to a track day at Silverstone and my mate took a 2wd Sapphire in Moonstone that I drove for a couple of laps. I was so disappointed with the turbo lag that corners got spikey but then the head gasket let go, like they often did.
He moved it on to another motor trader who replaced the head gasket and fitted a leather interior before he sold it for about £3K!
That's when I realised meeting your heroes can be disappointing, and old cars were probably best experienced in their era!
I can think of so many better ways of spending £350K, like my current house.![laugh](/inc/images/laugh.gif)

The RS500 was IIRC £35k when new. If instead you'd bought a flat (or even a house in some parts) of London for that money, you'd have made the same sort of appreciation - but could have rented it out in the mean time for masses of income.
The RS500 would have to fetch way more than £350k today to have been a great investment.
With the greatest respect that's a bit of a nonsense post because few original owners ever bought any Ford for an Investment and secondly most of us were of working class origin and never lived in London . Rest assured if I had bought one from my Glasgow Dealership and had the foresight to enjoy it sensibly and more importantly held onto it then I would be feted in Glasgow as the next Warren Buffet and very happy with my Investment .The RS500 would have to fetch way more than £350k today to have been a great investment.

I hate to break it to you, but there are lots of working class people in London & surroundings

this one looks stunning, 13k miles 1+ owner

£250,000......
My 3 door was a stunning Moonstone example wish I still had it (sold for £5k years ago, not a 500 but had a load of nice 500 parts on it).

I’d struggle having that rather than these two in the stable plus change.
But I get it, some just like an Old Ford.

I think the people that can splash £250K -> £350k on an RS500 will have a few things like that as well ……plus a nice E30 M3 Sport EVO …..and a Merc 190 EVO 2 …. and….. and…… But I get it, some just like an Old Ford.

I honestly don’t get these People that cant understand the price being asked . These are the Ford Ferrari , better built and less of them . A golden age for Ford in Britain that won’t be seen again .
Agreed. A black three door Cozzeh with 300 bhp was tremendous, more so if it ran on those lovely original wheels. RS500 for extra f![](/inc/images/censored.gif)
Those days have gone and even kids who weren't around in 1988 are in awe when they see one. Ditto E30 M3's, UR quattros etc.

k you points. The image, the attitude. 328GTB's etc, look out.

It's the rarity a bit too. Did my daughters prom with my Escort Cosworth 2 years ago, it had a crowd round it the whole time. Totally stood out compared to the Porsches, Lambo's etc that were about. Someone else arrived in a red 1990 LHD M3. that also drew a crowd.![](/inc/images/censored.gif)

Using it for my lads prom in 2 weeks, in for MOT as I type.

I fancied one of the metallic plum purple Escort Montes but had a 964 C4 instead. Another great car, but another 911.
My ex BIL took his daughter (well, my niece) to her prom 2 years ago in an immaculate bog stock 1987 500SEL in masons black. I'm not sure a new one would have had the same effect. Might have done, but a bit rental obvious.
