Fast Coupes Of The Eighties And Nineties

... the definition of a Coupe is lost or mis used or? I don't know but its not a fixed rule anymore or it never was? a bit frustrating it is.
I believe it was the BMW E34 5 Series that first boasted of 'Coupe like styling' to descrive the fact that the 3 box saloon wasn't quite as square rigged as before.Mercedes really went for broke with the CLS cars, and BMW followed with the chaotic asshattery of the 3 series coupe and 4 series gran-coupe;
3 series is a 4 door. 4 series is a coupe based on a 3 series. 5 series is a 4 door, 6 series is a coupe based on the 5 series etc etc.
But now a 3 series GT is a high roof 3 series, a 4 series gran coupe has 4 doors, a 5 series GT runs on the 7 series platform etc etc.
Grrrrr.

At school, a mate of mine brought one of these. It was a pretty rare car, but in its day, an utter bargain/

But he swapped it for an all back Capri 2.8 Special on Fiesta pepperpots (that was a thing).
Pepperpots were the standard 2.8 Injection wheel.![](https://live.staticflickr.com/4220/35219799121_845d9c55dd_b.jpg)

The Injection Special got the 13" RS 7 Spoke.
280 Brooklands got the oh-so-desireable 15" RS 7 Spoke.
Blimey, remember when the 18" alloys on the original DB7 looked impossibly huge.

What you really need is a Ford "Probe". Or perhaps not.
Few people will remember the Probe even existed in the 1990s. It was Ford's version of the Mazda MX-6 and a well styled 3-door FWD coupe with pop-up headlamps - so there should have been a lot to like. But everyone wanted a RWD 2-door BMW instead and sales fell way below Ford's expectations.
Mind you, Ford then followed up with the even less successful Cougar - essentially a Mondeo coupe.

My own Nissan 200sx was way better

The white one's surely a Subaru, no?Just noticed the similarity in shape and brought to mind the Subaru XT Turbo
I had a couple of FTOs and always felt that they were really unfairly criticised by many. A very fun car, that sounded brilliant and handled well. Shame it wasn't a bit faster but it was fine and it looked great for the money.

I always imagined that when I won the lottery I might start up a museum of 90s~ coupes that I liked and always wanted to compared back to back
FTO GPvR
Alfa GTV Cup
Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo plus
Celica GT4
Integra DC5/DC2
VW Corrado VR6
406 coupe
850csi
Etc etc. it would be a somewhat niche museum but I think it would be worth it, and still a cheap way to make an interesting car collection.

Ask me how i know!
Have we had the Subaru SVX yet ? I only ever met one person brave enough to part with his money and that was Stephen Conway who owned the Jewellers shop in Milton Keynes Shopping Centre . Some years later running into him driving a Mercedes SL500 I inquired after the Subaru . After a litany of failures most involving the Gearbox and a difficulty in sourcing parts he claimed to have traded it for "ten bob" against the Mercedes .To give him his due he was philosophical about the experience . Anyone have any experiences of the SVX , there cant be many of you ?
