I remember my dad coming back from somewhere saying he was going to build one of these Pimlico’s. Fortunately it never got as far as the 1968 transit diesel chassis cab he extended by about 6 feet adding another axle too. Double rear axle then a second hand box on the back with a roller shutter door. Think 1980s New Age Traveller spec. All this from a man who wore hand made brogue shoes, cavalry twirl trousers and a Harris tweed jacket.

The Alpine hasn’t moved from that spot for the past year - and for 2 years before that it was up on one of the garage ramps

Not necessarily - the requirement to get a plate off (presuming it isn't non-transferable) is that the car has been on continuous tax or SORN for more than five years, and can be demonstrated moving under it's own power if needed. The need for an MOT doesn't seem to be there any more.

Correct, found a plate on the ground nearby and ran it through a check. It has been off the road for 15 years but weirdly didn't look that bad despite the vandalism.

Actually, it may not be as simple now I read it again. If it's been on SORN for more than five years, it needs tax and MOT. If it's historic, it needs an MOT even if it's exempt.

And ultimately ridiculous. A car has to be roadworthy in order to transfer its registration to another car, which doesn't have to be roadworthy.

Just charge people double to take 'ownership' of a lost registration. That's got to be easier and more lucrative, surely?
