Here's an odd thing which I can't quite put my finger on - I love this era of boxey Maseratis but the similar shaped Alfas of the same period don't do it for me, despite being a big Alfa fan.
I have a real soft spot for 80s Alfa saloons, especially the 116 series transaxle cars. In particular the Giulietta and the later 75. Both a bit gawky looking I agree, yet somehow stylish in their own way. Owned a 75 for a few years and it was a superb driver’s car. They really got it together with the totally different Pininfarina styled 164 which some don’t like but I think is a fantastic example of industrial design.
Obviously all the above were and still are a step down from a contemporary Maserati. My dream garage would include a very early Biturbo 225 or 425, together with a last of the line Ghibli II. Oh and loads of other stuff as well!…

This man is being far too modest in the above statement. I've been following the build thread across on Retro Rides; he is an incredibly talented man.Link here. Warning you need a good couple of hours to absorb the talent.

My '66... as it was a week ago on its ridiculous 18" wheels

...and now on some more sensible 15" wheels with big bouncy 215/60 and 235/60 rubber...

That looks like it's had a lot of work done to be that straight and with those panel gaps - they certainly didn't leave the factory like that!! Looks a great car.![](https://thumbsnap.com/sc/pLXP8JCD.jpg)

I assume that a previous owner raised the suspension somehow? It looks really high, possibly the highest I've seen. The only one I've seen close was the rear of a friends '66 when he'd fitted '67 springs which were obviously "heavier" due to the extra weight of the later car. Would look even better a couple of inches lower IMO....

It certainly has been raised a bit, and yes it's had a fair bit of work done. I actually bought in from a chap near Salt Lake City (unseen) and had it shipped over here.I assume that a previous owner raised the suspension somehow? Agree it would look better a couple of inches lower, but right now I'm just enjoying the fact that the wheels don't rub on the arches, and the ride quality that comes from those 60 profile tyres

Here’s a picture from us out and about in a pretty French down on our way down to monaco for the historic gp last month. One look at my profile name on here and you’ll be able to guess what car I was in (it’s the green one) I’ve covered the number plate just for a tiny bit of privacy. Hope you don’t mind! I’ve got plenty more pictures of the trip if it interests anyone!

Chunky, I agree with your remarks about the XK but for some strange reason I picked this up at an auction a couple of weeks ago. Never the most beautiful of E types ! ![](https://thumbsnap.com/sc/ogjCLk1J.jpg)
Actually, I really like the Series 2, and I say that as an XK/S1 owner.![](https://thumbsnap.com/sc/ogjCLk1J.jpg)
I bought an opalescent Silver Grey with red interior S2 FHC years ago, which I still have. It is a rock solid West Coast car that was converted to RHD. After fitting a big valve head, changing the rear ratio to 2.88, I fitted fuel injection. I have done about 10,000 miles including "the ring". It goes like hot snot and has been totally reliable. Of all the undervalued E types, I think the S2 FHC is the one to get. I changed everything on it apart from the loom when I purchased it, as it had been sitting dormant in the garage of a prominent heart surgeon in the states for over 30 years prior to me. When I say everything I am talking engine +40 ,gearbox, tank, hi-torque starter, axle, brakes, radiator, bushes etc., the whole lot. I wasn't as expensive a job as you might think.

Later I got a Sherwood green/black interior S1 FHC to keep it company. Again, that has had everything, however it is on SUs. It has a new loom. Upgrades here are a big valve head, 123 distributor, S2 uprights abd brakes, Turrino wheels, Mangoletsi throttle linkage. 3.07 diff. It goes very well but does not have the pace of the fuel injected car. It has standard induction and standard manifolds with standard needles in the carbs. It also has standard soft Boge shocks which are nice. I recommend Green Stuff pads because they dont squeal.

This was joined by an XK120 OTS which came with lorry load of spares. It has had everything from the loom up again. Standard it is definitely not. It runs a rebuilt 4.2 engine +60 with mahle pistons, D -type cams and an E type 4spd synchro gearbox and hydraulic 9.5 inch clutch, 2.88 locking Salisbury diff, twin 2 inch SUs, 16 inch Dunlop wheels with Michelin Pilot E tyres, a steering rack as opposed to a box, alloy radiator, electric fan with rack conversion, 123 ignition, long branch manifold with 2.5 inch exhaust, AP Racing Monte Carlo brakes with a Wilwood bias pedal box which only just fit inside the wheels, MK2 Jaguar rear discs brakes. It has red Koni Shock absorbers which are far too stiff, I hope to get them altered this week. It is beastly.

I am just finishing another FHC which again has had the works, however I am adding a significant quantity of gubbins including EZ power Steering, Clayton AC, Jenvey Heritge ITBs with an Emerald ECU. It is Jaguar Battleship Grey with a red interior. Might go Turrino wheels again if I can save up in time. It is starting to look a bit congested.

When I get a minute, I want to finish my Renault 4 GTL, It has a very good body and a new galvanised chassis and is LHD. I need to complete the cooling system and the brakes the she is ready for the road.
