i have to replace my rear number plate. i have had different stories of the correct period design for my rear number plate. either plastic raised white letters on black ( yellow?? ) same letters as the front ones, or engraved silver non raised letters on black ?

car is a 1973 sprint soft top

cheers so much for correct answers

confused

Surely, since the plates will have been dealer-fitted when new, they will vary?

If you're keen on originality (and don't mind witnessing a bit of bloodshed), though, toodle off to the LotusElan.net forum and try asking a sensible question like what colour the engine block should have been painted. wink

(...the answer, being Lotus, is whatever shade of grey happened to fall to hand at the suppliers that week. Probably. Allegedly.)

If your car was built before 1st January 1973, you can use black plates with silver letters, even if the car was registered later. Otherwise, you should use white front, yellow rear.

If it was registered in 73 it would be yellow background and black letters, either plastic letters stuck on or embossed onto an aluminium plate. The move to the new reflective plates was a bit like the move to the new style number plates about 11 years ago, a way of showing the neighbours you had a new car.

My Europa was registered in January 1973, and legally has black plates because it was built in October 1972. Perhaps surprisingly, it has had black plates from new - the first owner opting not to fit what were then the new style of plate.
