Hi, I'm trying to learn what my best options are for a 5-speed gearbox upgrade. The car is a '71 Europa with the Renault motor. I already have the gordini stuff with the motor and a pair of dcoe 40's. It runs great, however here in Montana (USA) I sometimes have to much open road between the twisty stuff. I really need that extra gear. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The only problem for you is to find a decent renault 17 (or fuego or 18 etc..) 5 speed box. I think it should be a straight swap. There are a few web-sites for 17s which may give you ratios etc, and may even head you in the direction of an available box.
You could look up info on the 12 gordini and the 1600 alpines as well, but that is really for info only, as they're rare as hens teeth!
Cheers

There are a couple of options. You can go for the 395 5 speed, which is a a drop in, but lighter duty than the 4 speeds used by Lotus, or you can go for an NG series, newer, stronger, but needs a bit of work to use. They both use the same bellhousing.

The NG's require a bearing in the bellhousing, as opposed to the crank bearing, also you will need to swap the output shafts from your tranny (the rollpin holes are in a different position) or build/buy a twin-link rear suspension.

Then there are the shift linkage changes, but you will likely need to do this no matter which tranny you use.

I have installed an NG3 into my twincam, it wasn't hard, but I did a lot of extra work (twinlink suspension, cable shift, modified input shaft).

I know of a 395 5 speed for sale in Saskatchewan (not too far north of Montana) if you're interested, let me know and I'll pass your info on to him.

Thank you both for the info. I believe for my current needs the 395 would work fine. Yes I would be interested in the one in Sask. Please forward my Name and e-mail.

I've passed it on. You'll want to ensure that it is a 395 (I'm going on memory).

Good luck,
Gary

Have you spoken to Banks Europa at Southport here in England.

If you haven't got their details, let me know and I'll look them up for you
