Just interested in peoples experience opinions and advice (as I'm sure the advice will be clear given which forum I'm posting on), but has anyone here owned a Lotus Elan M100 and a S2000 and can give me a relative comparison about how they compare as daily drivers and running costs. The car will be used winter and summer 1 or 2 20 mile round trips to work a week.

Regards

Nick,
The last three posts in this thread might help a bit. The other thing would be to post on that forum and ask if anybody has experience of both cars.

Hi There

I've had my M100 Elan for over 8 years now and must say I am still pushed to find an affordable and suitable replacement.
The S2000 is a well built and cracking little car, however, I felt it lacked something for me. Power was good but handling I felt wasn't.

The Elan has suitable space for shopping and extra with a comfortable ride and great performance. She's not too thirsty and does stand out well in a crowd.

A potential down side is that the M100 is now getting on a bit so you would need to be sure on what you were buying. The lotuselancentral forum will give you all the advice and help you need.

Blipi is not a tidy example but feel free to contact me if you wish to have a quick spin.

Both cars are good so I'm sure you won't be disappointed with either choice!

Good luck

I followed a s2000 down a slip road the other day in my elan both giving it a fair amount of beans, seemed fairly close in pace untill we both had to slow a bit to join traffic, lovely looking s2000, if i had to replace the Elan i would certainly consider the S2000.

I think handling wise they are likely quite like comparing apples and oranges. From what i hear the s2000 is an exciting tail happy car, that can be a handful, the M100 on the other hand is superbly predictable and easy to drive fast, it has a great neutral handling that edges into mild understeer if lent on hard. (Nothing like the understeer you would expect from a FWD car though, drive one and it will surprise you).

I think both are great cars, one is a bit newer, a bit more of a lairy/exciting drive, and a great high revving engine. The Lotus however is certainly alot more unique/rare, probably easier to drive fast and has a fun little turbo engine thats incredibly fun when it comes on boost. (Especially with the chip upgrade)

I've not yet driven an s2000 however, this is meerly comparing what i've read about them with my own experience owning an M100. I can wholeheartedly recommend the M100 as a fun and practical sports car, i've no doubt the s2000 is too.

Running costs wise, i get around 28-32mpg, parts are not badly priced(especially as plenty of bits were borrowed from Vauxhall)and Lotus Elan Central is a great resource full of people who WILL help you if you need it, the important bits of the car are pretty much bullet-proof, even if the interior and plastic bits arn't! I use my Elan as a daily driver with no problems whatsoever, its a very comfortable car and easy to drive around town.
