Hi, 3 week old owner of 2002 Elise. Car superb fun (even for a nut-job biker!!!) however selecting 1st gear from standstill not very good. In fact in general the gearbox ain't great.

Is this normal, especially the 1st gear problem as it's a pain?

Big thanks.

Yep, the Elise gearbox linkage is a pile of shite.
Strangely, I've never seen more than a passing reference to any gearshift quality problems in any magazine review of the car - conspiracy of silence amongst a patriotic British press, perhaps?

I test drove many, before settling on the only S1 I could find which had a gearchange which was even bearable.

The S2 is supposed to be better - I've never driven one, but it feels identical to the S1 sat shifting the gears in a showroom.

The linkage kits available from people like Eliseparts are supposed to be a big improvement though - I intend to get round to buying and fitting one shortly to find out.

Thanks Guys.

4 weeks now and I haven't bought any goodies, so linkage and short shift on the list.

I think the gearshift starts off okay and just gets worse over time, mines getting a bit crap now after 29,000 miles but it was fine when the car was new.
