Lotus have fired up the engine of their 2010 Formula One car for the first time, at their factory in Hingham.

After a delay of about 24 hours, technical director Mike Gascoyne and the team engineers were able to celebrate a small milestone as the Cosworth V8 engine sparked into life for the first time at 10pm on Saturday night, before being given a longer run at 1am Sunday morning.

Gascoyne said: “We've still got a little bit of work to do. We had some problems with gearbox settings and gearbox control, but it's great to have made that progress and taken that step.

“We'll be shaking the car down on Tuesday, so we've got a lot of work ahead. Just getting this fire-up is one thing, but there is still a lot of parts to the car that have got to go on there.

“But we're on the home run now, and that's the first Lotus Cosworth that has fired up for 27 years, so that is a big milestone.”

Lotus' 2010 charger and its full livery is set to be officially unveiled at London's Royal Horticultural Rooms on Friday before making its maiden track appearance at Formula One's third official test session of the close season, in Jerez, Spain, on February 17.

Fantastic, really hope they can continue forging closer ties to group Lotus and will be wholeheartedly behind them this year!

On another f1 related note, what do we think of Kovalainens personalised Evora colourscheme? I think the white looks fantastic with a stripe on it personally. Mostly i'm glad to see Lotus f1 and group Lotus working together, especially with all the doubts people have over to what extent this should be caled Lotus or not.
