Esprit project priceing
Discussion
I have heard of a part restored S2 Esprit JPS for sale, details are limited at the moment but whats the consensus of opinion on price? I'm well aware it depends on exactly how good or bad it is but give me a ball park figure if you can. A price of £2k has been mentioned, which apparently includes new parts, thoughts??
What you pay for it doesn't matter. It is the cost of rebuilding it to an acceptable standard that will really frighten you.
I have heard stories of £40,000 being spent completely to restore S1s to "as new" condition.
In the long run it is far cheaper to buy an absolute minter than it is to buy a rough car and have it restored.
Whether it is as much fun, or as satisfying, is another matter altogether.
A JPS Esprit is also a difficult car to restore, as so much of the trim was bespoke.
If it helps, I sold this scruffy S3 for £2750. The car was complete, it ran well and was mechanically sound. The paintwork was a bit rough and the interior was tired.
Once I had worked out how much it was going to cost to get straight, it was a no brainer. The car wasn't worth the time or money.
It was a shame, because it had the makings of a good car.

Hi Pat, thanks for the reply. Having restored a few cars before i completely understand what you say.
This car has been offered to me out the blue, i wasn't looking for one, however i have always had a soft spot for the JPS cars and to be honest wouldn't have the £000s to buy a minter. I did notice the one that recently sold in the classifieds for £10k but other than that i haven't seen any for sale to compare prices, hence the question.
As i said in the original post details are limited at the moment to i guess the first thing to do is try and find out more or go and see it!

Along with the S1, the JPS is definitely one of the most desirable classic Esprits.
One day they will be worth serious money.
S1 prices are now finally moving in the right direction, after years of being almost worthless.
If you have somewhere to store it, buying a scruffy early Esprit is probably a sound investment.
But I would ideally want a complete car, rather than something in a million bits.

Its about taking a gamble. No point in buying the car when the price is on the up. Check out the market value and determine prices over say the last 3 years. That will give you an indication of the level of interest.
Poor examples do command a great deal of expenditure and there are very few minters about. Its not an easy car to work on and requires alot of thought, adhereing to exactly what the manual says. They do bite back!
Check out that chassis as they do rot.Engines are expensive and gearbox parts are virtually non existant( Its from a citroen Maserati I believe)
