Lotus Trademarks Ethos Name

'Project Eagle' could be called Ethos when it is unveiled at British Motor Show in July

After much speculation as to what Lotus is going to call its new £45,000 GT model – codenamed ‘Eagle’ – it looks like the company has settled on the name ‘Ethos’.

The Hethel firm has trademarked the name ‘Ethos’ in the US as of March 8 2008, and it is registered as a vehicle.

The trademark was unearthed after a search of the US Patent website.

The four-seat mid-sized coupe is the company’s most important model since the original Elise.

After Lotus launches the new car it will then concentrate on a successor to the Esprit, due in 2010.

Ethos? And a US trademark only?

Sounds more like a future environmental project, or that they can't use the name Eagle in the US. Doesn't mean we'll get the lame name though.

hmm prefer the name Ethos to Eagle.

Does anyone know why it's tradition for lotus to name all thier cars with names beginning in E? I feel like I should know this useless piece of info.

Over to the geeks of PH's!

Lotus's love affair with the letter 'E' stems from the success of the Lotus Eleven...

(& Exige wink ..) your right, the other night, after dinner,we sat & tried to think of other suitable names instead of 'Eagle' that begins with E (get a life man!)we spent about an hour & we didnt think of Ethos!

Now, get the Ethos/Eagle out the way & get on with the Esprit please. biggrin

Chryler had an 'Eagle' subbrand for a while in the 80s/90s to peddle rebadged Mitsubishis & Renaults, might explain why they couldn't use that name in the USA.

I don't care if they call it "Bob" as long as it's good.

But being British i'm sure it will be half hearted and have mini metro mirrors.

And havin worked for a british specialist manufactoring company for 13 years yes i can say that with confidents.

Was about to say that. I think the Eagle Talon was a rebadged Eclipse if I recall rightly.

or E-Dross.

Anyway, sounds a bit high and mighty and holier than thau to me. Sounds just the name for some namby pamby envoronmentalists car.

I say name it something un-pc excalibur! I reckon Eon would be a good name too given how long lotus tend to produce a single model variant.

Suggested 'Etoile' to them but they weren't impressed. Maybe they think no-one would know how to pronounce it...

What, beige and fluffy on-top / brown and sloppy underneath?!?

(then again, Lotus would probably give that colour-scheme a try...)
