Hi guys

I'm putting our Elan back on the road after a year's layup (I know, I know) and it has taken the layup amazingly well. Started first time and so fast I didn't even hear it crank!

I have an MoT booked for tomorrow but it is not going to pass at the moment because the indicators and hazards don't work.

I've just replaced the flasher relay by taking the old part to Camberley Auto Factors and saying "I want one of those please!" and they looked it up in a book, went out back, and came back with one. Result.

Now that the new relay is in, the indicator stalk is still dead but even touching the hazard switch causes the relay to buzz.

The fuse is ok. But when I took the fuse out and put it back in, the relay buzzed again even though the ignition was off and the keys out.

Anyone have any ideas?

I'm guessing a faulty hazard switch at this point.

It's just a GM part (from a Carlton) so pop to the scrappy and rescue a switch, to cross it off your 'is this broken?' list

Yep, I've since learned that. Carlton or Senator actually.

I'd rather fit new but am having trouble finding a company that a) sells them new and b) looks reputable.

BTW, I located the part - brand new from a Vauxhall dealer.

Unfortunately it hasn't fixed the problem.

So having replaced the relay and the switch I'm a bit stumped now. frown

Jon RB,
You have to make sure the hazard switch is pushed back fully in the recepticle behind.
You need to get your hand behind it (via the glovebox opening) and press against it as you push the hazard switch in.

The hazard switch is from a Vauxhall Carlton / Senator of the same age.

BTW for any info on the M100, be sure to visit www.lotuselancentral.com

Hi Paul

I've done better than that - I've managed to unglue the ashtray by using a hairdryer to melt the glue so have direct access to the wiring behind the switch, so it is indeed pushed firmly home.

No, unfortunately not. frown

Too many cars, too many things I need to do, not enough time. At this rate it'll be snowing before the Elan is back on the road. frown

The annoying thing is that I reckon that the lack of indicators / hazard lights are the only thing standing between our Elan and an MoT.
